1. Introduction :

When an engineer starts to design a building, he takes in

consideration all the actions that can be applied on each
structural element n or all the building its self, one of these
action is called torsion, and in this experiment we will study
.the effect of torsion on a steel bar

2. Objective :

This experiment aims to study the behavior of the material

under the torsion stress, and measure its amount and the
modulus of rigidity of the steel and compare it to the
specification.

2.1 Definition

Torsion: is the twisting of an object due to an applied

.torque

polar moment of inertia: is the amount of rotate

.resistance about the polar axis of an object

twist angle: is the angle that formed due to applied

.torque , and it’s the behavior of the torsion
3. Apparatus :
A steel bar , vernier and torsion machine test as shown .4
in (3.1)

3.1:

Torsion specimen
4.Procedure :

First we measured the diameter and the length of the steel

specimen, then we put the specimen in the machine and
. applied the test , and finally we did our calculations

6.Calculations :
Slope = 10.9-1.3\0.209-0.104=T\ φ=91.428
L=75 mm d=6mm
J= π d^4\32 = 127.23
G= Slope * L \J = 53.89 Gpa
Doesn’t match the required range between 75-80 Gpa
for steel.
τ max = Tmax *r \J = 19.4 *1000 *3 \ 91.428= 636.56
Mpa
τ upper yield stress : the required stress to convert
from elastic to plastic region
= 17.3 *1000*3 \J =567.659
τ lower yield stress : the minimum required stress to
maintain the plastic region
= 18.2 *1000*3 \J = 597.191

7.Discussion & Conclusion :

By the above date , we mentioned that our

specimen does not meet the standard range of
steel (75-80) Gpa . this happened because of the
declination of the steel bar (the bar does not fit
properly with the jaws of the machine) and may
the machine itself has a little lag caused by time
since the machine is too old.

7.1 Sources of errors :

The errors in this experiment was the human approximation

and measurements, heat(the room temperature change) and
. an unexpected error in the dial gage
