Safety Requirements
NOV M/D Totco equipment is installed and operated in a controlled drilling rig environment
involving hazardous situations. Proper maintenance is important for safe and reliable operation.
Procedures outlined in NOV M/D Totco manuals are the recommended methods of performing
operations and maintenance.

To avoid injury to personnel or equipment damage, carefully observe requirements outlined

in this section.

Personnel Training
All personnel performing installation, operations, repair, or maintenance procedures on the
equipment, or those in the vicinity of the equipment, should be trained on rig safety, tool operation,
and maintenance to ensure their safety.

Personnel should wear protective gear during installation, maintenance, and certain
operations.

Contact the NOV M/D Totco training department for information about equipment operation and
maintenance training.

Recommended Tools
Service operations may require the use of tools designed specifically for the purpose described.
NOV M/D Totco recommends that only those tools specified be used when stated. Ensure that
personnel and equipment safety are not jeopardized when following service procedures or using
tools not specifically recommended by NOV M/D Totco.
Special tools required for installation and service:
 T10025A Spanner Wrench

Replacing Components
 Verify that all components (such as cables, hoses, etc.) are tagged and labeled during
assembly and disassembly of equipment to ensure correct installment.
 Replace failed or damaged components with genuine NOV M/D Totco parts. Failure to do so
could result in equipment damage or injury to personnel.
Routine Maintenance
Equipment must be maintained on a routine basis. See the service manual for maintenance
recommendations.

Failure to conduct routine maintenance could result in equipment damage or injury to

personnel.

Proper Use of Equipment

NOV M/D Totco equipment is designed for specific functions and applications, and should be used
only for its intended purpose.

Unpacking and Inspection

The shipping container was constructed to protect the Pressure Debooster from normal shocks
and vibration encountered during shipment. Unpack the unit carefully and inspect it for damage. If
there is obvious damage, notify the shipping agency and M/D Totco immediately.

Storage
No special storage is required. It is recommened that the unit be stored in its shipping container
until time of installation. The shipping container is designed to protect the instrument physically
and against adverse environmental conditions.

2: Description and Operation

Description
Both the rig air filter and the instrument air filter remove solids and liquids from the input air supply.
The instrument air filter is installed in the air line ahead of the regulator to protect the regulator. The
regulator receives high-pressure rig air input and is adjusted to deliver 20 psig (138 kPa) to
pneumatically operated instrumentation. These include electric-to-pneumatic transducers, mud
flow recorders, and display units for air purging.

Purpose
Pneumatically operated instrumentation requires a clean dry air supply. Air compressor equipment
often contain contaminants ranging between undesirable gases, water vapor, dirt drawn into the
compressor from the atmosphere, rust and scale from system plumbing, and oil used for
compressor lubrication. The Rig Air Filter and Instrument Air Filter-Regulator Assemblies, often
installed in combination by M/D Totco deliver acceptable instrument-quality air, for operation of
pneumatic instrumentation, from such a possibly dirty air supply described above.

Rig Air Filter

High pressure rig air is filtered before being piped to the instrument air filter-regulator. Fluid
accumulated in the filter is expelled automatically to atmosphere through an automatic drain. A
removable bowl houses a felt (or cotton) filter element which removes dirt particles from the air
supply.

Air Filter-Regulator
The air filter-regulator is similar in design and operation to the rig air filter. It is placed immediately
downstream of the rig air filter and provides additional filtration of high pressure air supply before
regulation at 20 psi (138 kPa). An automatic drain, similar to the type used in the rig air filter is
used for this filter. The filter element cartridge inside the bowl is replaceable.
The instrument air regulator provides a uniform 20 psig (138 kPa) pressure output independent of
pressure variations which may occur in the rig air supply. Output may be controlled by an adjusting
screw which is covered by a bonnet to prevent tampering. Turning the adjusting screw clockwise
increases output pressure; turning counterclockwise decreases output pressure.

Operation
Note: Individual air filters and filter-regulators may be operated separately for limited
use. Typical drilling operations include both a rig air filter and an instrument air filter-
regulator connected in series in the air line.
Incoming high pressure air from the rig air supply passes through the rig air filter, the instrument air
filter, and then to the air regulator before being applied to pneumatically operated instruments (see
Figure 2.3 on page 12). In both filters, particles as small as 5 microns are trapped (3 micron filters
available). Any liquids extracted from the incoming air are eventually expelled through the filter
drains. Clean, dry air is pressure regulated down to 20 psig (140kPa) output by turning the
adjusting screw counterclockwise for a gauge indication of 20 psig (138 kPa).

3: Installation & Maintenance

This section contains procedures for installing the rig air filter and instrument air filter-regulator and
for subsequent functional testing of the components. Installation requires a rig air shut off valve
installed ahead of the filter and filter-regulator (see Figure 2.3 on page 12).

Installation
Mounting Procedure
The rig air filter and instrument air filter-regulator should be installed in a location protected from a
hostile environment yet easily accessible for service and maintenance. Also, unobstructed routing
and connection of air (nylon) tubing should be considered. Equipment outline and dimensions are
shown in "Rig Air Filter Dimensions" on page 14 and "Air Filter-Regulator Dimensions" on page 15.
Install and connect units as follows:
1. Mount units vertically on solid structure using hardware supplied with unit.
2. Blow out tubing or hose and connect between units as shown in Figure 2.3 on page 12.
3. Connect rig air filter input tubing to rig air supply lines; connect regulator output line to
pneumatic instrument such as a transducer, indicator, controller, or recorder.

Maintenance
This section contains procedures for periodic inspection and maintenance. The periodic inspection
emphasizes equipment safety, security, and cleanliness. Maintenance is limited to removal and
replacement of major assemblies found faulty during troubleshooting.

Periodic Inspection
Inspect and adjust the rig air filter, instrument air filter-regulator and associated items as listed in
Table below.

Warning: Always shut off rig air supply at shutoff valve and bleed off air at
equipment before servicing. Removal of parts under high pressure can cause
injury.

Routine Maintenance
Satisfactory operation of pneumatic instruments is dependent upon the use of clean, dry,
instrument quality air. Periodically, conduct the following maintenance.

Warning: Close rig air shutoff valve and depressurize all of system before
removing rig air filter bowl. Personal injury could result from bowl being
released under high pressure.

1. Depressurize air system and remove bowl from rig air filter. Remove and clean filter element
using kerosene, thinners or similar cleaning solvent; blow dry using jet of clean dry air. If
disposable type, replace. If automatic drain is blocked, remove from bowl and clean orifices
using solvent.
2. Remove bowl from instrument air filter-regulator. Examine filter cartridge; if stained with oil,
install new cartridge. If automatic drain is blocked remove from bowl and clean orifices using
solvent.
3. Drain fluid from rig air tanks every day. Periodically blow out air lines to remove water which
has collected in low spots
Use soap solution for general cleaning of external surfaces. Do not jet water against components.
After component disassembly use soap solution to clean parts.
