Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate self-confidence and social skills in taking alternate roles in informal


meetings and discussions. (A5)

2. Exhibit the ability to apply the principles and skills to conduct and participate in formal
meetings using appropriate language. (A4)

3. Display appropriate written communication skills in writing minutes of meetings. (A5)

Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with the language skills needed in meetings
and discussions. The communicative aspects of conducting meetings and discussions
will be emphasised, especially presenting, justifying ideas, persuading and negotiating. It
will also equip students with appropriate strategies and language to write effective
meeting-related documents (notices, agenda and minutes).

3. Language structure appropriate for meeting-related documents
 Reported Speech
 Passive and Active forms and
 Tenses.
4. Basic principles of interacting in discussions and meetings
 Etiquette for meetings and discussions
5. Language appropriate for discussions and meetings
(For example : making suggestions and amendments, presenting opinions and
ideas, giving instructions, agreeing and disagreeing, negotiating, seeking
clarification, justifying, interrupting, persuading, summarising, evaluating, ending a
meeting/ discussion)
