GT-2 Installation & Maintenance Instructions 4" -6"-8"- 12" ANSI Class 125 through 900 Price: $6.00 ea. Daniel Gas Turbine Meter IGURE 1 Gas Turbine meter chown whith Model MRT 07 Flow Totalizer AcCURATE MEASUREMENT EXPLAINED SL {A the ges flow eniers the meter inlet, iis guided through a flow area created by the inside diameter of the meter and the outside diameter of the flow deflector. The flow deflector or nose cone is used to increase the velocity of the gas to prepare its entry to the meter rotor. The increase in velocity provides ample rotor driving ‘ore. ‘Alter the flowing gas has been accelerated it flows through the ‘meter rotor. The rotor is designed with a specific number of blades positioned at a precise angie to the flow stream. The gas impinges, ‘on the rotor blades causing the rotor to rotate. The angular velocity of the rotor is diractly proportional to the gas velocity and conse- ‘quently to the volumetric ‘low rate. Hence, by accurately measuring the rotor rotation the volumet- ric flow rate can be determined. The Danie! Gas Turbine Meter is furnished with two magnetic pick ups wt ‘sense the rotation of the rotor throuch accurately positioned magnets in the rotor hub. As the magnet passes the coil it produces a voltage pulse which represents a discret unit of volume. The turbine meter output is rated in pulses por unit volume. Daniel offers two independent isolated pick ups which can be used with Daniel local totalizers and/or flow instrumentation capable of aocopting inputs of pressure, temperature and density ‘rensduc- ers for calculations of corrected flow or mass. A wet gas stream may require inspection only once per year while dry, dusty gas may require service as frequently as 30 days. Periodic in- spections are necessary fortworeasons: (1) tocheck the spin time to insure rangeabilty of the mater, and (2) to visually check internal parts. J Spin Test -eeuetmeeemannninniuessatece A spin test of the gas turbine meter rotor does nol represent absolute pioof over the entre range of the meter, ‘out only an indicator of its accuracy in the lower range. A spin ‘est is condusted and recorded on the gas turbine meter specification sheet by Daniel prior to shipment, but another test is advised before installation. Be cure to record the spin time of this test for future reference. Conduct he spin test in a relatively draltfree environment or by blocking off back of inner housing (Figure 11). 1. After their removal from meter, allow time for internais to reach ambient temperature. 2, Normally, a stopwatch is activated while simutaneously diving the rotor a quick spin. 3. The time it takes the rotor to coast to a complete stop is the *spin down time 4. A considerable loss af time would indicate either bearing deterioration or a build-up cf dirt or sludge in the bearings. ‘As shown in Figure 12, a loss of spin down time does not necessarily Indicate that the meter is no longer accurate. It does indicate a reduced rangeability or a loss of accura: Gy at the minimum flow rate. For example, Curve No. 2 in Chart represents a standard 4’ Daniel Gas Tubine Meter with 1.7% accuracy over a 33 to 1 range. When friction is added, as shown by Curve No. 8, ihe spin down ‘ime decreases to 40 seconds, a loss of approximately 1/3 of the original spin down time. This loss indicatos a lose of accuracy in the over portion of the range. Now ihe meter accuracy is 2.6% over the 33 to 1 renge. Althougn the meter “has “fallen off” on the lower portion due to trition, the accu- tagy Is less than 2% at flow rates greater than 950 ACFH (49 to 1 range) These spin down times and their respective calibration curves represent an example of a typical 4" ges turbine meter and indicate the loss due to friction in bearings. FIGURE 11 If fretion is indicated by unsuitable spin down time, the bearings should be replaced (see Disassembly ~ Assembly Procedures, Pages 7-13). ‘Ar Calitration of Cuive No. 74111 Danie! A selected volume of gas is simultaneously oassed through both meters and their registration is ebsorved The observations (registrations) are then corrected tor any temperature end pressure cifferences between the wo meters. A percentage error is determined tor any flowing conditions by instaling the masiex meter in the dipeline with the test meter oF at atmospheric condtions by installing the test meter in series with the mastor metor and utlizng a portable blower to provide the volume ‘hrough the two meters. Three devices which can be used as master meters in transfer proving are the gas turbine meter, rotary meter and the orifice meter. OF the three devices, the master 2s turbine meter provides a system that is simple, accurate, repeatable, fesi and requres less additional instrumentation CRITICAL FLOW PROVERS—ORIFICE / VENTURI A critical flow prover 's a constriction type flow meter in which the phonomencn of ertical fow ovcurs ae the gas Velocity in the throat ot the meter is accelerated to equal the velocity of sound in the pipe at operating conditions. Citical flow provers are of two types, the critical low orifice prover and the critical flow venturi prover. The critical low prover test method has the advantage of the meter being tested under the samo conditions and configuration that it normally operates, The critical flow orifies prover is used to test gas lurbine meiers a! operating pressure of 16 psig or more. flow is passed through the meter and the orifice, then discharged into the atmosphere. The critical flow venturi prover also is used to tast gas turbine meters at 15 psig of more. The venturi is insialed as anindine' device so that gas tlows through the meter, through the ventuti then back into the pipeline. There is To loss of gas due to venting, no high noise levels and no hazardous conditions. The venturi outle! section designed to recover 90-98% of the critical pressure loss.
