chapter 11.1
exercise 38
we have to describe the level surfaces of the function:

f (x, y, z) = x + 2y + 3z

For a constant f (x, y, z) we will have :

x + 2y + 3z = c

Which represents the plates with same normal vector: i+2j +3k, so level curves
are parallel plates which have the normal vector i + 2j + 3k.

exercise 40
we have to describe the level surfaces of the function:

f (x, y, z) =| x | + | y | + | z |

level curves will satisfy the equation:

| x | + | y | + | z |= C

But it is difficult to recognize the curve. So, lets see what happens for constant
z. we will have: | x | + | y |= C which is clearly rhombus for positive C. so,
given level curve must be octahedron. Which has center at the origin and height
of 2C.

exercise 40
we have to describe the “level hypersurfaces” of the function

f (x, y, z, t) = x2 + y 2 + z 2 + t2

level curves will satisfy the equation:

x2 + y 2 + z 2 + t 2 = C

1
We cant imagine this surface,
√ but it is easy to guess that it is 4 dimensional
with “radius” C and centered at the origin. when we say “radius”
“sphere” p
we mean x2 + y 2 + z 2 + t2

chapter 11.3
exercise 5
We have to find all the first partial derivatives of the function specified, and
evaluate them at the given point.
x
f (x, y) = tan−1 ( ) (−1, 1)
y
∂f (x, y) 1 y2 1 y
= 2 = 2 2
· = 2
∂x x
1 + y2 x +y y x + y2
∂f (−1, 1) 1
= (1)
∂x 2
∂f (x, y) 1 y2 −x −x
= 2 = 2 2
· 2 = 2
∂y x
1 + y2 x +y y x + y2
∂f (−1, 1) 1 1 1
= · =
∂y 2 1 2
