Focus on Case Development
Guidelines on developing the people management case
 The case is a portrayal of the real experiences of people at the
work place
 The case should be of about 2000 words or more
 This case can cover some experiences/issues that you or your
friend or colleague has faced. Fictitious names can be used.

How to write the case


 There are many cases which will be discussed in class. The case
can be developed on these lines.
 The case should be in a narrative form and should essentially
contain the following -
Data on the people-profiles-roles /relationships formal and informal
Organisational structure reporting
Data on context /incidents / behaviour
Narration style- Language-Flow of presentation
The Analysis will be assessed for
Conceptual focus Decisional focus
The Content of the case should contain the following
 The business the company is into
 Some issues/concerns currently faced by the organization in its
environment
 The issue being faced by the individual/team
 The people/characters involved
 There are some focus characters, some background characters.
 Focus characters are those affected by the problem
 Background characters are those who are part of it and are
contributing to the issue in some way
 The profiles of the characters
 The relationship between people -the team structure /reporting
relationships, informal relationships etc
 A description of what is happening in the context. Describe the
issue in terms of day-to-day behaviour/conversations/incidents
taking place between the people
 The impact of the issue on the individual /team /work / business
 A history of the issue- how it began, of incidents/events etc
 An event is one that is formally planned in the organization For
eg- A meeting
 An incident is one that just happens between people. For eg- A
disagreement during a meeting is an incident. In people
management cases, incidents involving people, their behaviours,
language etc will have to be explicit in the narration of the case.
The theme of the case
 The case can mainly focus on any one of the themes dealt with in
the course. However, other concepts can also be covered provided
it is relevant to the course.
The Focus as an Analyst
• Issues faced by the people in different roles
• Areas of Concern in terms of productivity or performance
• Contextual interpretations
• Factors for consideration
• Recommendations for improvement
ANALYSIS TO ACTION POINT
• List down all issues
• List down the people associated
• Identify what is (are) the critical issue (s)
• Identify who creates the issue and who is affected
• Generate areas of concern in terms of performance/ productivity
• List down factors to be considered wherever possible
• LOOK AT CRITICALITY FROM THE CONTEXT NOT ONLY THE person’s
VIEW POINT
ANALYSIS TO ACTION POINT
• Starts with the one affected

• Generate many solutions

• No best solution, only satisficing solutions…
