3.3 In 300 words or less, state your organization’s general mission and purpose including a description of the
advocacy-based approaches used to implement goals.

We envisions at creating an environmentally conscious generation where waste is managed and

recycled as their behavior

We have Zero waste campaigns that are intended to change the mindset that people have towards
huge accumulation of plastic waste in their communities. In addition this changes their behavior on
the way they think and dispose off plastic waste. In the same advocacy programs in communities we
also do waste collection and recruit marginalized groups of people in those specific communities to
become waste collector while earning it.

9
3.4 In 300 words or less, describe the target constituency and/or community that your organization serves.
Please include the demographics for this group (i.e. women, out of school youth, etc).

We have a climate emergency where by 2050.

3.5 In 300 words or less, state the problem and/or issue that your organization seeks to address.

There are over 150 Million Tons of Plastic already in the oceans. Every year, 8 million tons of plastic

10
waste end up in oceans and lakes. Experts predict that there will be more plastic than fish in oceans
by 2050. And yet, the more waste we generate, the more waste we need to dispose of, but how?

Plastic waste is not the only challenge we have in Uganda and Africa as a whole. Housing is still very
expensive especially for people living in slums and low income areas. In Kampala, homes in slums
are usually filled up with water when it rains, damaging property and making it difficult for people to
live decently and yet, dignified housing is expensive considering that these families earn an average
of $40 as monthly income. The lack of quality housing compromises people’s health and
development opportunities

In addition Uganda has an 80% unemployment rate amongst the youth and according to projections,
this number is estimated to grow by 2020. This is majorly because scores of students who graduate in
different courses from the numerous universities across the country are ill equipped with actual work
environment skills and ethics. Students are focused on passing the standardized tests rather than the
relation and application of the learned concepts to real life while employment agencies on the other
hand seek persons that have competences and experiences in the day to day management of the
aspects of such agencies. In light of this, the majority of the youths have low capacities to attain
employment and are as well do not have the necessary skill set to create their own employments.

3.6 In 300 words or less, describe how your organization raises public awareness about this issue and/or
problem.

11
Through Zero waste campaigns that we always have in different part of Africa, we have been able to change
people mindset while educating many of them on good waste management practices

3.7 In 300 words or less, please include a description of an innovative entrepreneurial and sustainable
approach that your organization has taken to deliver a service or program to your targeted community or to promote
advocacy around an issue.

Upcycle Africa restore landscapes and transforms the waste crisis in Africa into employment
opportunities for marginalised groups of people while training them the skills of turning plastic waste
into products of inherent value for example by making accessories and eco-friendly building
materials. Construction and empowerment of youths. Upcycle Africa empower communities to break
the cycle of poverty and channel their own development by training them to turn plastic onto money.
We aim to realize access to sustainable, safe and durable homes by promoting long lasting and
proven solutions through our upcycling framework. Access to good housing improves people’s health
and development opportunities. Here we train our local communities especially the disadvantaged
youth to protect the environment through restoration and upcycling plastic waste. Bottles replaces

12
environmentally unfriendly bricks which are burnt for days, promoting deforestation. Bottles are
collected and compacted with soil, making the houses very cost effective and affordable.
Furthermore, the buildings are strong, buffer heat and are earthquake resistant.

3.8 In 300 words or less, provide three concrete examples (results) that demonstrate how your organization has
had an impact on the targeted community that you serve within the past year.

We have collected 3000,000 plastic bottles and recycled 10 tons of other plastic waste which we have
sold to different recycling companies. Contributed towards a plastic waste free planet by cleaning
beaches, streets and bus stations. We have so far constructed 117 houses in different parts of Africa.
Provided shelter to over 11 marginalised families. Upcycle Africa has created direct jobs to 278
women and youth in our twelve communities of operation who serve on contract as waste pickers.
Our school recycling project recovers plastic waste from over 52 schools monthly while educating
students on good waste managemlkjent practices. We would like to change the mind-set on the way
people think and dispose of plastic waste. . With our slogan waste is not waste until you waste it we
have reached over 2245,000 people in sensitization programs in communities while changing their
mindset on the way they think and dispose of plastic waste.

13
3.9 In 300 words or less, describe any accountability mechanisms used in the delivery of your organization’s
project activities or services (i.e. community leadership consultations and involvement in programs to demonstrate
the interventions are relevant to the majority of the poor in the target community and empowers them in a
sustainable way) along with any mechanisms to determine the transparency of your operations.

14
3.10 In 300 words or less, provide three examples of how your organization has partnered with other civil
society organizations, the private sector, educational institutions, and/or government agencies. Please include
examples of the type of program activities requiring partner coordination and support.

We have been able to partner with different organizations for example Social innovation Academy,
Kyempapuqs, Bremble, Ccupa House in Tanzania and many other organization in different parts of Africa
while training them and join hands with them to address the issues of climate catastrophe that is facing our
planet.

15
3.11 Can the work of your organization be easily replicated by other civil society organizations facing similar
issues/problems in their locale? If so, how? Please describe in up to 300 words or less.

Yes our work has been replicate in different parts of the world and on the other side we have been approached
by different organization both in Africa and world at large who seeks to address the challenges of huge
accumulation of plastic waste through the same approach as ours.
We have a climate emergency and if we don’t we don’t join hands to address the issue that really affect our
planet we might fail. We provide mentorship to emerging entrepreneurs and organizations to be able to
replicate the same model to their own communities.
