location, subsurface conditions encountered at exploration site and results of laboratory testing.
These conclusions and recommendations should not be extrapolated to other areas without our
prior review.

2.0. PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES

The purpose of the current geotechnical investigation was to explore and determine the
existing sub-strata conditions such as stratification. denseness or hardness of the strata, position of
ground water table at the location etc. and to evaluate approximate range of safe bearing capacity
for the proposed structure using empirical formulas provided in the relevant IS codes. The goal of
our investigation was to identify the key geotechnical issues that could potentially impact the
proposed project and to develop geotechnical recommendations for design and construction of the
project.
Our scope of services included the following tasks:
• Field marking of boring locations

• Drilling of 3 numbers of bore holes (BH-1, BH-2 and BH-3) up to the depth as instructed by the
engineer in-charge of the concern department.
• Bore holes were drilled below the respective existing ground level in order to know the sub

3.1. Location And Topography of Bhubaneswar

3.1.1. Geography

The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar is located between 20°25' N latitudes and 85055'E
longitude on the western fringe of coastal plain across the main axis of Eastern Ghats in Khurda
district of Odisha. The city lies on the low lateritic plateau and the erosion has made its topography
a valley and ridge one, having series of drainage channels. The average elevation is 45 m above

MSL

3.1.2 Climate

Bhubaneswar is located on the coastal plains of Odisha, south-west of the River Mahanadi.
It experiences typical tropical weather conditions, and succumbs to the heat and cold waves that
sweep in from north India. The summer months from March to May are hot and humid, and
temperatures often shoal past 40. C in May. The south west monsoon lashes Odisha in June,
bringing relief to the parched environs of Bhubaneswar. July and August receive the maximum
rainfall, which may average over 220 mm a month.

3.1.3. Wind speed

As per Appendix-A of IS: 875(Part-3)-1987 in Bhubaneswar, basic wind speed at 10m

4.0. FIELD INVESTIGATION PROGRAM

Field investigation work was in accordance with IS: 1892 -1979.

Field works include
, Boring in the sub-strata by Rotary Drilling Method
., Conducting SPT in soil as per IS: 2131 and collection of SPT samples
., Collection of disturbed samples from bore holes.
, Collection of stone cores.

4.1. Present Site Condition

The present site is located at Bhubaneswar judicial court, Kalpana, Bhubaneswar. BH-1 to
BH-3 were conducted for the proposed project. The average R.L. of all the Bore holes is found to be
100.377 m (considering the nearest road level as 100 m). This shows that the present site is plain
terrain. Site photographs are attached with this report in Appendix-J which provide a clear view
about the existing condition of the site.

4.2. Methodology of Investigation

By using rotary drilling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up to desired depth of 20.0 m.
Rotary method of boring is most widely used method of advancing a boreholes. This method along
with use of drilling mud to stabilize the side of the borehole is likely to give the least disturbance to
soils beneath the base of the borehole and permit taking near to truly undisturbed samples.
Diameter of boreholes was 150 mm Where caving of boreholes occurred, casings were used to
keep the boreholes stable.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were conducted in the boreholes. By connecting a split
spoon sampler to 'A' rods and driving it by 45 em using a 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a height
of 75 em. The tests were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981(Reaffirmed 1987).
Number of blows required for each 15 em penetration of the split spoon sampler was
recorded. First 15 cm penetration is ignored. The cumulative no. of blows required to penetrate the
rest 30 em of the 45 cm sampling interval is reported as the SPT value (N value).
For collection of un-disturbed sample thin wall samplers have been used. In order to reduce
wall friction, suitable precautions such as oiling the surface shall be taken.

Note: E.G.L. = Existing Ground Level.

4.4. Logging and Sample Collection

The bore logs of bore holes show about the details of the exploration of bore holes. Samples
were collected by the split spoon sampler after conducting SPT. The collected samples were
preserved in transparent polythene bags with proper identification mark.
Cores recovered from hard strata were arranged in a core box with proper leveling and identification
mark. From the stone strata core recovery {CR% = (Length of Core ILength of run) x 1DO} & stone
quality designation (ROD) = (total length of core pieces of more than 1DDmm Ilength of run) x 1DO}
were computed for every drilling run. Details of CR and ROD in different boreholes are presented in
the report.
For further examination and testing, all samples were transported to our NABL accredited laboratory
at Bhubaneswar.

8.0. CONCLUSION

lOCO has planned for "Construction of Judicial Complex (Double Basement with 10
Storied) near Bhubaneswar Court, Kalpana, Bhubaneswar". MIs S.M. Consultants was
conducted geotechnical investigation for this project. The proposed building is a double
basement with 10 storied building. The foundation is expected at about 8 m. below the N.G.L.

Site stratigraphy:
:;., Boring is conducted as per assumed RL (+) 100.000 m by considering the nearest road level.
In this case the RL of BH-1, BH-2 and BH-3 are (+) 100.600 m, (+) 100.230 m and
(+) 100.300 m respectively. The average RL of the three bore holes is (+) 100.377 m.
:;., At the proposed site these three boreholes were drilled up to 20 m depth each below their
existing ground levels.
, Clayey sand strata is available for <lverage depth of 2.67 m from lop. Lateritic soil strata is in
compression stage at a average depth of 1.85 m below the clayey sand strata. This strata is in
early rock formation stage. This Lateritic strata is followed by soft sand stone strata from
which core could not be obtained. The soft sand stone strata will be available at founding
level.
Ground water level:
, Ground water level was found at 9.0 m to 9.5 m depth below the existing G. L in the month of
April, 2016. Since the drilling work was done during non-monsoon period, the ground water
level may rise during the monsoon period.
:.- Lateritic soil strata is porous and may be water bearing in monsoon.

Criteria for recommendation of foundation:

;.. The foundations typically must satisfy two independent design criteria. Firstly, there
must be an acceptable factor of safety (FOS) against bearing capacity failure of the soil
under the maximum design load In this case FOS of 3 has been considered. Secondly, the
total settlement of the foundation due to initial distortion and consolidation of the soils under
sustained loading during the lifetime of the structure should fall within the limits that are
structurally tolerable (Refer IS 6403:1981.Clause-6.1 & 6.1.1). In this case 60 mm settlement

IS considered as per IS 1904'1986-Table-1. f1;~

.,. The selection of type of foundation is therefore governed primarily by the magnitude of
the maximum and permanent loading conditions, type of structure and allowable
settlements,
, The foundation recommendation is based on the height of structure and possible settlement.

Foundation recommendations:

r The structural loading pattern of the structure is not provided by the client.
.,. The sse at founding level of 8.0 m from N.G.L may be considered at 60 T/m2.
, Before laying of basement, plate load test should be conducted at the foundation level to
confirm the recommended sse as per IS 1888:1982.
Safety precautions:.

y Adequate water proofing measures should be provided below basement.

r Perforated pipe for the basement envelope with connected wells to release water pressure
build up may be required.
r This general recommendation is proposed and the designer is at liberty to decide the depth and
the type of foundation intended basing on the sub-soil characteristics made available in this
report.
