anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who
still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power
of our democracy, tonight is your answer” (Obama: Victory Speech 2008). By way of
assimilation, Obama is legitimizing himself to the people for whom Martin Luther King is a
hero in America. Martin Luther King’s visons (dream) was human innate equality.

into Persian. Compare the two texts below and answer the following questions:

the bolded expressions. (2 marks)

b Explain Grice’s maxim of relation as well as the strategy of explicitation as applied by

the translator in translating the source text with reference to the bolded expressions in the
target text. (4 marks)

Source text: If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible;
who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our
democracy, tonight is your answer.
Back translation of the target text (Persian): [Today’s victory is the realization of that ‘day’ when this
nation [America] will rise up and live according to its aspirations and will see human innate equality and
this is the realization of Martin Luther King’s “dream” – one of the activists against racism in America. ]
If there is anyone here who still doubts the point that America is a place where everything is possible, if there is
anyone who still doubts that the dream of our founders is still alive in our time, if there is anyone who still
questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
