Learning Math: Make it a Game Systems of Linear Equations

I. TOPIC

Solving Systems of Linear Equations by substitution method

II. OBJECTIVES

1. Recall the different kinds of systems of linear equations

2. Solve systems of linear equations

III. MATERIALS

Cartolina

IV. PRELIMINARIES

A. DRILL
Activity #1 Where Am I?

Directions: Arrange the chairs and students in rows and columns. Assign each student a
point (x,y) with -3 ≤ x ≤ 3 and -3 ≤ y ≤ 3. Have someone near the center of the room be
(0,0) and base the coordinates of the other students accordingly.

Write/post the following equations one at a time on the board.

a. x + y = 3
b. x – y = 1
c. y = 2x
d. x + y = -3
e. 2x + 2y = 6

When an equation is presented on the board the students representing the coordinates of a
solution of the equation must stand up. After this round, repeat the process but give a
system of linear equations instead.

B. REVIEW
Activity #2 Are You Belong?
Directions: Ask for volunteers to form three groups, 5 students in each group. Name the
first group, CONSISTENT INDEPENDENT; 2nd group, CONSISTENT DEPENDENT;
and 3rd group, INCONSISTENT.

Write three columns on the board as follows;

CONSISTENT CONSISTENT
INCONSISTENT
INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT

Pieces of cartolina in which each of the following is written must be prepared for this
activity. These pieces of cartolina must be taped on one side of the board at the start of
the activity.

1. One solution
2. Parallel graphs
3. No solution
4. Equal slopes and y-intercepts
5. Coincident graphs
6. Equal slopes but different y-intercepts
7. Intersecting graphs
8. Unequal slopes and y-intercepts
9. Infinite solutions
10. Overlapping graphs

Each of the three groups should get all the pieces of cartolina which should belong to
them and tape these under the assigned column. The activity must be completed within
three minutes.

C. MOTIVATION
Activity # 3 Ready Sing!

Directions; Divide the class into 5 groups for the 5 vowels. Thus, group 1 – a, group 2 –
e, group 3 – I, group 4 – o, group 5 – u. Sing Leron, Leron Sinta but substitute all vowels
in the words by the vowels sound assigned to your group. After your group’s turn, point
at any group to sing next.

Group 1 – Laran, Laran, Santa Group 2 – Leren, Leren, Sente…..

Baka ng papaya Group 3 – Lirin, Lirin, Sinti
Dala dala’y basla Group 4 – Loron, Loron, Sonto
Sasadlan ng banga Group 5 – Lurun, Lurun, Suntu
Pagdatang sa dala
Nabala ang sanga
Kapas kapalaran
Hamanap ng aba

Then everybody can sing together using their respective vowels.

V. ACTIVITIES

Activity # 4 BALANCING EQUATIONS

DIVISION OF CITY SCHOOLS OF MANDALUYONG Teaching Guide – Grade 8
Learning Math: Make it a Game Systems of Linear Equations

For each balance shown below, calculate the unknown weights; where there are two identical
symbols, their weights are the same. Also, write down and solve an equation for each situation.

Example:

2 7

x+2=7
x=5

3 5 2 5 3

10 2 4 10

Guide Questions: 10 6

1. What mathematics concepts or

principles did you apply in order to
solve for the unknown?
2. How do you find the value of the unknown?
3. Do you think there are other ways of solving each equation?

Activity #5 MATCH & LEARN!

Directions: Group the class into 3. With a given period of time, let each group be able to finish
the activity by assigning numbers to fill the blanks with appropriate numbers from the number
pool, which represents the given equation.

Equation 1

x+y=1 __ + __ = 1

x – 2y = -2 __ - 2(__) = -2
-5

Equation 2
-4
3x - 2y = -1 3(__ ) -2( __ )= -1

x – 4y = -19 __ -4 (__) = -19 -3

Equation 3 0
x-y=8 __ - __ = 8

2x + y = 1 2(__ ) + __ = 1 1

3
Guide Questions:
1. How did you determine the number/s that fits into
the equation?
2. What mathematics concept/principles did you apply 5
to answer the activity?
3. Do you think there is another way to solve for an
equation?
4. What if the numbers that may satisfy an equation is
not given? Explain how you will find the answer.

Note: The teacher may give example/s in solving systems of linear equation by
substitution method.

VI. ANALYSIS
Activity #6 Let’s Solve!
Directions: With the help of your partner, solve each system of equations using the substitution
method.

x–y=6 3x – y = -2

x+y=5 x+y=4

Guide Questions:
1. When solving a system of linear equation, how will you know if the system is
dependent? If inconsistent?
2. What are the steps in solving systems of equation using substitution method?

VII. ABSTRACTION

Steps in solving systems of linear equation by substitution method:

1. Choose the simpler equation then solve for one variable in terms of the other.
2. Using the second equation, substitute the expression obtained in step 1 and
solve for the remaining variable.
3. Using the expression in step 1, substitute the value of the variable obtained in
step 2 to solve for the other variable.
4. Check by substituting the values of x and y in the original equations.

VIII. APPLICATION
Activity #7 PROBLEM SOLVING!
Directions: Represent each problem using a system of linear equation in two variables. Then
solve the linear system using substitution method.

1. A collection of 25-cent coins and one-peso coins has a total value of Php 16.50. If there
are 30 coins in all, how many of each kind were there?

2. The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 13. Twice the ones digits is two more than
four times the tens digit. Find the number.
