Enduring Understanding:
 Listening is the key to great relationships and good understanding. It’s important in today’s society, with all of our
high-tech communication capabilities, to tune in and really listen to one another whenever possible. An effective
listener is the one who shows attention cares about what you are saying by responding appropriately.
SUBJECT
This applies to all subjects since listening skill are present in any forms.
INTEGRATION
EXCITE (Aspiration/Motivation)
Explore:
 Tell students they are going to hear a telephone conversation between an American man and woman. Tell them to
put their pens down and simply listen. When students are ready, play the recording.
 Ask students to call out all the names they can remember. Write them on the board
 Put students into pairs. Write these questions on the board and tell them to guess the answers:
a. What’s the relationship between Kevin and Anne?
b. Who is Dennis?
c. Who are Becky and Kate?
Ask process questions:
1. What are your observations from an audio clip we just listened to?
2. How does listening attentively make it easier to get the information?

Discuss the following:

 Let the students open their ECAS Book on page 9. Let them read Listening and Reading Effectively

 Ask:
1. What tools can be used to organize thinking when comparing and contrasting?
2. How can we organize data for many objects?
3. How can we determine a relevant fact vs. an irrelevant one?
 Have students share their ideas. Correct any confusion. For a collaborative element, allow students to interact and
evaluate one another's work.
Ask students to write a one sentence explanation of comparing and contrasting as wrap up.

Evaluation
