Subject: Entrepreneurship

My name is Christopher Salber and I am the Mass Communication teacher at Windsor Mill
MS (and father of a 2 yr old and 4 yr old that enjoys your swim school). I am currently
developing an Entrepreneurship program at Windsor Mill. Our project plan is Design
Thinking in a Middle School Classroom for Entrepreneurship. The main aspect of the project
encompasses students identifying problems in their community by incorporating the design
thinking concept to create a solution to the problem. I had been reaching out to
organizations in the Baltimore area in an attempt to show our students the process that
successful companies have to go through and the importance of the community in which the
company works.

Some skills we are trying to instill in the students are divergent thinking when approached
with a problem, understanding and empathizing with the clientele and their problems in
order to develop solutions, the benefit and potential reward of risk taking, and using failure
as a learning opportunity. I want the students to understand the planning that happens and
decision making of various events and the purpose behind them.

I would love for my students to get a firsthand account on how a business attempts to
increase the amount of people that come through and sign up, how a business reaches out
to the community, and learn about day to day operations and possibly work out a field trip
to your facilities.

Please let me know if we could work something out.

Thanks
Mr Salber

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for reaching out to us on this - and for being Goldfish family! We truly appreciate
it.

We love supporting our community and we are interested in working with you to help your
students learn about business.

Would you send me some details on specifically what you are looking for?

Thank you!
Julie

Subject: RE: Entrepreneurship

Thank you, I met with a gentlemen during my boys swim lesson yesterday. I provided him
with a few ideas that seems may work.
1st – my students are pitching their business ideas to a company called junior achievement.
Their program helps students work on their financial literacy and gives them a foundation to
start and run a business. What I am doing goes beyond their program. They have offered
my classes to use their space on either Monday the 20th or Wednesday the 22nd and I would
like local community business to provide the students with feedback on their proposals.
They are pitching their ideas as if they are starting a business (like a modified shark tank)
2nd – I would love to start a program where the students develop out reach programs for
existing businesses. It allows the students to see that the usefulness of the
entrepreneurship process and how it applies to real life. I was thinking that I could bring 15-
30 interested students to Goldfish during the school day so they could develop outreach
programs that could potentially increase enrollment at goldfish. If they could come up with
effective outreach programs they could see their hard work in play in their own community.
In addition I would like to see if those students could use the pool after they work on the
outreach program (which is unlikely because BCPS would consider it a “high-risk” activity)
If you would like to discuss anything further feel free to email me or call at 215-380-8238

Thanks again,
Christopher Salber

Hi Christopher,

First, thank you for going above and beyond for your students! Great teachers serve us all,
not just the kids in their classes. You showing the relationships between what they are
doing and the real business community is extraordinary.

While I think both of the opportunities are fantastic, I believe working with Goldfish Swim
School - Owings Mills on developing outreach programs would be the best for us and for the
students. Could we set up a call to talk about what is needed there?

If you need help with the Shark Tank volunteers, let us know and we will try our best to
support you.

Also, for the pool party - it would be Zachary's call, but there may be some limitations on
our side because Goldfish is a dedicated learn-to-swim facility for kids ages 4 months to 12
years. I am sure we could figure out an alternative celebration for the students.

Thanks again!
Julie

I do agree that the pool party aspect would have a number of limitations on both sides, but
if something could be worked out, it would be a nice treat for the students. I would love to
take some time and talk about having students help develop outreach programs. The best
time to reach me would prob be after school on Tuesday or in the morning (8:30-10 am) on
Wednesday. My number is 215-380-8238.
As for the Shark Tank program we will be holding that at Junior Achievement on Wednesday
the 22nd from 10-12. We would love any support you could give.
Thanks again

I have a special volunteer opportunity that has just come up….

Might you be interested in participating in “Shark Tank” presentations with students from Windsor Mills
MS next Wednesday (5/22)??

About 30 students will be coming to our office here at around 9:00, they will pitch business ideas, and
then have lunch at around noon.

I’m glad to share more info, but just wanted to check your availability first…

Cheers,

Glad you’re getting some time!

This is a special event that was requested by a teacher who has been utilizing our “It’s My Business”
curriculum with his students.  The lessons guide students through creating business proposals.  The
school is selecting the 10-best presentations out of those given in class.  Those students (about 30 or so)
will be invited to present to us at our offices.

Volunteers and staff will help to review the proposals and provide questions and reflections to the
students.

Chris –

I’ll have two volunteers here on Wednesday –
 Diana Emmerson, who is my JA colleague in Howard and Anne Arundel Counties
 Dina Minor, Collections Supervisor for Toyota Financial

Do you have additional volunteers beyond the Goldfish folks?

I invited Diana and Dina to be here at 9:30.

Do you have a preference for how the room should be arranged? Classroom-style or more organic?

Are there any other details that we should work out?

Hi, Chris –

We have a last-minute opportunity that has come up, as someone from Presidio is interested in
presenting to a group of school students on June 11.

From their website: Presidio is the premier provider of digital transformation solutions built on agile
secure infrastructure deployed in a multi-cloud world with business analytics.

In plain language: They do some of the coding and programming for Instagram.

Might this be of interest to you to pull together a presentation at your school on 6/11?

That’s fantastic.

Presidio would bring 2-3 staff members and would present on their individual fields digital engineers,
finance and usually one other department. This gives the students a wide range of what potential
careers you could go into under one industry. Once they talk about what they do and the path they took
to get their (college, trade school, internships, etc...) the students can ask questions and then closing
remarks and end of presentation.

The time frame for the day is based off of what you all have available.
