Problem: An air-conditioning system is to

take in air at 1 atm, 34◦ C, and 70%
relative humidity and deliver it at 22 ◦ C
and 50% relative humidity. The air flows
first over the cooling coils, where it is
cooled and dehumidified, and then over
the resistance heating wires, where it is
heated to the desired temperature. As-
suming that the condensate is removed
from the cooling section at 10 ◦ C,
determine:
(a) the temperature of air before it enters the heating section
(b) the amount of heat removed in the cooling section, and
(c) the amount of heat transferred in the heating section, both in kJ/kg dry air.

Assumptions
1. steady flow
2. mass flow rate of dry air remains constant throughout
3. dry air and water vapor (at this temperature) are ideal gases
4. KE = P E = 0

Part a)
At state point 1: we have sufficient information to identify the state point on the psychrometric chart and
determine:

h∗1 = 95.2 kJ/kgdry air

ω1 = 0.0238 kg H2 O/kgdry air

At state point 3:

h∗3 = 43.1 kJ/kgdry air

ω3 = 0.0082 kg H2 O/kgdry air

At state point 2: we know that the mixture is saturated, φ2 = 100% and since there is no change in the
moisture content in the heating section , ω2 = ω3 .

hw ≈ hf @10 ◦ C = 42.02 kJ/kg (from Table A-4)

h∗2 = 31.8 kJ/kgdry air

T2 = 11.1 ◦ C ⇐ part a)
Part b)
We note that

ṁa,1 = ṁa,2 = ṁa,3 = ṁa

Performing an energy balance between state point 1 and 2

(ṁh)a,1 + (ṁh)w,1 − ṁw hw − Q̇out = (ṁh)a,2 + (ṁh)w,2

ṁa h∗1 − ṁw hw − Q̇out = ṁa h∗2

Q̇out mw
qout = = (h∗1 − h∗2 ) − hw
ṁa ma
But
mw
= ω1 − ω2
ma
Therefore

qout = (h∗1 − h∗2 ) − (ω1 − ω2 )hw

= (95.2 − 31.8) kJ/kg − (0.0238 − 0.0082) kg H2 O/kgdry air × 42.02kJ/kg

= 62.7 kJ/kgdry air ⇐ part b)

Part c)
In the heating section

qin = h∗3 − h∗2 = 43.1 kJ/kg − 31.8 kJ/kg = 11.3 kJ/kg ⇐ part c)
