INSTRUCTIONS

You only have to answer 10 out of the 12 questions. Programmable Calculators are not allowed.
Use pencil to write on your answer sheet. When using eraser, be sure that you have erased well.
Cellular phones are strictly forbidden in the exam room.

-9
{In all problems below take εo=10 /36π}
1. Find the potential difference V(Φ) for 0≤ Φ≤ α.
2. Express Maxwell’s equations for the static electric field both in their differential
forms and their integral forms. Explain with your own words their meanings.

3. Calculate the total charges contained in a cone of 2 m radius and 3 m height

centered on the z axis with its face in the x-y plane of Cartesian coordinates
system. The charge density is given by ρv=x4y2cos(zπ/3) (C/m3). (show your
work)

4. Let ̂ 400 (A/m2) Find the total current flowing through that portion of
the spherical surface defined by: r=0.8, bounded by 0.1π<θ<0.3π, 0<φ<2π. (show
your work)

5. A positive test charge is used to explore the field of a single positive charge Q at
P(a,b,c). If the test charge is placed at the origin, the force on it is in the direction
0.5 0.5√3 and when the test charge is moved to (1,0,0), the force is in the
direction of 0.6 0.8 . Find a, b, and c.

6. A parallel plate capacitor is storing 1 milli-joule when the difference of the

voltage potential between the plates is equal to 100V. If the electric field between
the plates is 1MV/m, and the plates area is 1m2. Determine the susceptibility of
the dielectric material separating the plates.

7. A thin circular ring with a radius = r1 and a total positive charge Q1 uniformly
distributed, is placed parallel to the plane with it center at (0,0,-2).
Another thin circular ring with a radius = r2 and a total charge Q2 uniformly
distributed is placed parallel to the ̂ plane with it center at (-4,0,0). Assume
that r2=2r1, find the vector E at the origin. (Sketch the rings and the Electric field
at the origin.

8. A point charge of 1 C is held on the z axis at one meter above a very large
metallic plate place in the x-y plane. Use a method of your choice to determine
the charge density on the plate surface.

For the following questions, a homogenous dielectric sphere of a radius of 10 cm has

the volume charge density 10 / .

9. Use Gauss’s Law to determine

10. Verify your results by evaluating . .

11. Sketch the magnitude of the electric flux density for 0<R<∝.

12. Calculate the electric potential as a function of R.

Good Luck ☺
