Thank You!

To the leader:

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Get the picture? I

am so blessed to have you here and leading this group of
students. Did you know that God had you picked out to
come and help with this DNOW before you even heard
about it, or before we even planned it? God has you here
to teach a wonderful truth to these students: that Jesus is
able to save!

I pray you’ll be blessed as you share this with the students

you’ll be with over the weekend.

I know these weekends can be exhausting as you chase

students, talk with them, stay up until all hours of the
night and get up to go again. I pray that you’ll have the
energy and the strength to be the vessel that God uses to
change lives for eternity. That’s what we’re dealing with
here: souls and eternity.

Thanks for being a part! Now let’s get going!

Theme Explanation

HOW does Jesus save us? We hear all the time that salvation will
come to us if we confess Him as our Lord. We hear that Jesus will
save us, but how does it work?

The Good News is so familiar to some people that we forget that

God was working through the entire process, ensuring that every pos-
sible requirement was fulfilled. He saw everything through to the
end. What all did God ensure so that we could be saved?

Our lessons will focus on these things. First we’ll explore how Je-
sus fulfilled prophecy in our first worship session. We’ll then study
why Jesus had to be a man Friday night. Saturday morning we’ll study
why Jesus had to be God. Saturday afternoon we’ll talk about why Je-
sus had to die. Saturday night we’ll explain the Gospel as a whole
during worship and Saturday night for Bible study we’ll explain that
Jesus had to rise from the dead.

By putting these pieces together we’ll discover that Jesus met

every requirement placed on man by God, and yet was God and so
able to fulfill those requirements. One man couldn’t be punished for
all sin, only God could. Yet man was the one who had to be punished
because man had rebelled against God.

It’s a beautiful story. Understanding just a sliver of how it all fits

together will help us understand just how wonderful our God is, and
how mighty to save our Savior really is.
Bible Study Friday Night
Jesus Had to Be Man Hebrews 2:14-18
Opening Idea: Imagine a trial is going on: The judge is there in the judge’s seat, the jury is
ready to go, the defense and prosecution are all at their tables, but there’s no person on trial.
Would the trial keep going? Would the judge hand out a sentence? Could they actually send
the person to jail if they weren’t there?
The same idea is why Jesus had to be a man. God was not the one who sinned. Animals
were not the ones who sinned. Man was who sinned against God. Man is who is on trial.
Each and every one of us is on trial. We have offended God by rebelling against Him, by doing
exactly the opposite of what He has told us.

Jesus had to be a human. Why?

We are slaves and held captive.

Slaves to sin.
The Bible is very clear that man is a slave to the sin he commits. We just
can’t get out of it! Romans 3:10 lets us know that there isn’t a single person
who is right with God. Nobody!
Ask: Are there any sins you feel especially tied to and can’t get out of? (If no
students share, share some of your own struggles with them)
Captive to death
“For the wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23 We may have heard it so many
times that we don’t even hear it anymore. It’s the truth though. Because
we are slaves to sin we are chained to death. The devil has the power of
death, and because of this, power over us!
Ask: When you think about the devil, what comes to mind?
Ask: Do you ever think about death, yours specifically? We’ll all die one
day.

We needed the help

Abraham’s offspring is humanity
Jesus had to become a man because man is who needed the help. Angels
are already on good terms with God and in heaven with Him. We are the
ones who are dying. We are the ones who are God’s enemies. Jesus came
to help humanity.

We needed a high priest

A high priest could only be a man
Fully human in every way. What do you read in the Bible that shows that
Jesus was a human in every way? (See the list)
A man needed to be tested and suffer
Humans (us) are the ones who are tested and fail. We suffer and die. Jesus
had to become a man so He could be tested like we are tested and suffer
like us, but also more than us. (We’ll check out Hebrews 4:15 at the end of
this lesson)
Ask: How do you feel tested by sin? Do you suffer for your or other’s sin?

Propitiation
God was angry with sinners.
Sin makes God angry because it’s rebellion against Him. It’s us telling Him
we know better for our lives than He does. God made us! Who could know
us better?
Jesus, as a man, fulfilled all the requirements God had set toward man
Jesus kept the rules. He obeyed all of them. He followed every guideline to
the letter (Again Hebrews 4:15).
Therefore, Jesus was able to satisfy God’s anger with man by being a man who was
perfect.
We’ll get to this in the next lesson, but go ahead and plant this thought: Je-
sus was perfect. When He died on the cross, He was the sacrifice. He
pleased God by giving up His life and took on the punishment for sin we de-
served. He made it so God would not just be overlooking sin, but dealing
with sin.

Ask: what do you know about Jesus from the Bible that shows He was a man?
He got hungry (Matthew 21:18)
He got thirsty (John 19:28)
He got tired (Mark 4:38)
He cried (John 11:35)
He was born (Luke 2:7)
He had brothers and a mom (Matthew 12:46)
He died (Matthew 27:50)

Other than essential for salvation, what else does Jesus being man mean for us?
He can identify with us! Hebrews 4:15

A Response:
Sin is something that EVERYONE has in their life. Are there sins that are in your life now
that you need to confess to God? Take some time before you turn out the lights tonight
to ask God to forgive you for your sins. Ask Him to make you right as only He can.
Bible Study Saturday Morning
Jesus had to be God Hebrews 7:26-28 and Psalms 49:6-9 & 15

Could Jesus have been a man and only a man, and we still be made right with God by His life
and death? It all depends on the requirements made of man to be right with God.
Take the cup with a lot of holes in it and ask a volunteer to hold it. Ask another volunteer to
start filling the cup with water using the eye dropper.
Let them try as long as they wish to fill the cup totally.
Explain that no matter how hard they tried, with the tools given to them, they could never fill
the cup entirely.
Take the same cup and go to faucet (like the kitchen sink) and let the water run into it until it
over flows.
Explain that now, because of the method of filling the cup, it is full and could potentially al-
ways be full.
This is how it is when we try to save our own lives, versus when Jesus came and as God and
saved us.

Jesus had to be perfect

Man cannot be perfect (Romans 1)
We covered this: Man is completely incapable of being perfect. PERIOD!
Only God can be perfect
Here’s the good news: God is perfect. Jesus had to be God so that He could
be a man and be perfect at the same time. By living this double life (God
and Man) Jesus was able to fulfill two things at once: Be who needed the
help and be the perfect helper at the same time.

One man would not buy back one life

The life of a man is too costly to buy
Ask: What is the most expensive thing you have EVER bought? (Ask if they
saved money, worked for it, etc to see how much they tried to earn it)
Can you imagine ever buying a life? Psalms lets us know that man can’t buy
back a man. We could never EVER afford to buy ourselves out of death. It
just can’t be done!
It is hopeless to buy yourself or anyone else back from sin
Ask: Have you ever heard of someone saving someone else’s life? Share
story you heard.
Can you imagine trying to keep someone else from dying? It may require
physical strength or lots of money, cut could you ever stop them from dying
permanently? Eventually they, like everyone else, would pass away. They
would give into death. We just couldn’t stop them.
Only God could buy back a life
God made your life and has rights to it
Ask: Have you ever made something and kept it for a long time? Share!
Because God made you, He can buy you back. Because you are His crea-
tion, He is able to do with you what He wants. Guess what? He wants you
to be right with Him! He wants for you to be free from your sin. A God who
wants that is a loving God!
God is powerful enough to buy you back
Death is powerful, no one could argue that. It’s the one thing that every
single person on the planet will experience regardless of race, riches, coun-
try, family, or belief. Everyone will die. God, however, is even master over
death and more powerful than death itself! That’s why He can buy you
back from sin: He’s just that strong!

Other than essential for salvation, what else does Jesus being God mean for us?
Our savior was not a man who was insane or a liar, but God Himself.
God made Himself man; He came to live among His creation.
He became one of us, so that He could identify with us and save us at the same time.
Man experience God in the flesh: Immanuel.

A Response:
God is strong. Jesus is strong. Have you doubted that recently as life seemed to be over-
whelming? Take time now to thank God for two things: wanting to buy you back from
your sin and being strong enough to do so!

Bible Study Saturday Night
Jesus had to Rise 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 and 51-57

Ask: Who has been to a funeral recently? (If a student hasn’t, share your own experience)
Ask them to describe the whole event: hearing the news, going to visitation, going to the
funeral, watching the person buried.
Ask what they were feeling.
Ask them to talk about how they knew the person and what they meant to them.
Finally, ask them whether or not they would love to see them again, alive and well.
The story of Jesus could be broken up into four parts: His Birth, Life, Death, and Resurrection.
All are vitally important to our being made right with God. By His virgin Birth He became a
man who was not tainted by Adam’s sin. His Life was perfect and therefore He was able to be
a spotless sacrifice. His Death paid the penalty that we were due and satisfied God’s anger at
sin.
Could all of these happened and then Jesus have been raised and we still be saved? Not ac-
cording to Paul in 1 Corinthians 15. Some of these people were saying that the dead could
not be raised up. Paul was arguing that if NO ONE could be raised from the dead, then Christ
couldn’t have been raised, and therefore He would not be God.
If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead like He said He was capable of and would do, we would have
no salvation.

Since Jesus rose, God is powerful

Death is strong but God is stronger!
Remember how we talked about God being able to buy us back because He is
powerful? He shows the world that He is even more powerful than that by
raising HIMSELF from the dead. What a God!

Since Jesus rose, so will we

His empty tomb means our will be empty too
Ask before filling in the second bold blank: How many of you believe that there
will be life after death? Ask why and play the devil’s advocate for a little bit.
See if they say because Jesus rose!
If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then why on earth would we think that we
could? Without Jesus rising from the tomb, we wouldn’t have any life after
life to look forward to. We would die and be dead. If Jesus didn’t rise up,
we wouldn’t either.
Since Jesus rose, He is God
Can you raise yourself from the dead?
Jesus proved His deity by raising HIMSELF from the dead. Men had been used
by God to raise others from the dead (Elijah, Paul, etc), but no one had ever
raised themselves from death: only God could do that. Since only God
could raise Himself, Jesus proved that He was powerful, but JUST powerful,
that He was GOD himself!

Other than essential for salvation, what else does Jesus rising from the dead mean for us?
It means that our Savior was and is powerful and mighty.
He is able to conquer death!
How much can Jesus help us in our daily needs?

A response:
It’s been a long weekend and you’ve learned a lot. Here’s the main question: Are you a
Christian? If you are, PRAISE GOD for being able to save you and pray about how you
can share this Good News with someone who needs to hear it. If you aren’t, I pray that
you’ll accept Christ’s offer of eternal life TODAY, while it’s still today. Then let us know
about it!

Saturday Morning Devotion

Student Devotion
For your time with God this morning, start by reading Isaiah 53 (yes, the
whole chapter).

Like the men in verse 3, has there been a time when you rejected or turned
away from Jesus?

Jesus was pierced because of our transgressions (verse 5). That means our
sin, our wrong doing, our rebellion to God, caused Him both physical and
spiritual pain. Yet in all this, He didn’t even open His mouth.

Spend a few moments in prayer thanking God for sending Jesus to die for your
sins. Keep in mind that He sent His son not because you deserve it. God sent
Jesus because He loves us.

A Thought for the Leader

Jesus died so that God’s name could be made more famous. Jesus died so
that God would get the glory for saving our ungrateful, sinful selves from eter-
nal damnation.

Jesus died to give us life.

Be in prayer for these students. Ask each one when they came to know the
Lord and what He has done for them. Be very intentional today as you spend
tie with your group. Jesus died for them. Have a conversation with each one
today that shows you really care about them and love them.

May God bless your efforts today.

Sunday Morning Devotion

Student Devotion
Read Isaiah 59:12-21

What areas in your life testify against God? To ask it a different way, how
does your life show God you know what’s best for your life and He doesn’t?

Take a moment to think of how much god has impacted your life.

He created you.
He loves you.
He wants you to be right with Him.

To intercede means to get involved on behalf of another.

God sent Jesus to “intercede” for us. Jesus got involved on our behalf so that
we could be right with God.

Thank God that when no else intercedes for us, Jesus did even though we re-
jected Him.

A Thought for the Leader

Before you pack it up, take some time to pray for these students. You met
them over one weekend and now they are headed back to their normal life.
Their life is filled with pressures, successes, failures, and the daily breathing in
and out of being a teenager.

Pray that their lives would be marked by their unyielding dedication to their
Lord and savior and that the Good News of Jesus would constantly be on their
lips.
