Shuoying Factory Tour and Design House Office Tour Reflection Paper

1. Details about the Company

From the start of the video the tour guide established that the Shuoying Camera Factory
was leading manufacturers of multiple camera products. She mentioned that the company has
multiple buildings in its location in Shenzhen City, and another in a different city in China.
Shenzhen is known as a commerce center where technology can be bought very cheaply. It
makes perfect sense for the company to be located in such a rich and established location to
minimize transportation costs.

2. First Impressions on the Assembly Line

The video cuts to the assembly line where the tour guide introduces us to the assembly
area of the factory. On first glance we can see that the assembly line is well organized, and
fairly lit. The area is very long and takes in components on one side, and assembles it on the
other end. We can also see a conveyor belt moving assembled units slowly across the table. It
can be observed that the assembly line is minimizing its worker’s movement so the worker can
focus on assembling each unit. Considering that the Shuoying Camera Factory can output
millions of cameras, it is really impressive to see that their workforce are able to produce that in
a calm pace.

3. Workers in the Assembly Line

The tour guide states that in normal operations, there are around 300 to 500 workers
operating. The workers are wearing their uniforms and grouped in clusters according to each
table, and in each table, there are different components for each type of cameras being
assembled. The equipment is sufficient enough for each worker. However, considering
ergonomics, it can be observed that the workers spend the majority of their time looking down. It
can be suggested to minimize the time looking down by the workers which can be accomplished
by redesigning their work surface. On the upside, the chairs do have backrests to support the
worker’s back and help maintain good posture. A guide for each station is also posted on the
front of each worker for their guidance.

4. The R&D Team Office

 The R&D team’s office is spacious and pleasing to work within. It is clearly seen that
their engineers are working hard for each camera design and specifications. It is also amazing
to think that the technology we hold in our hands today was first developed in offices like these,
and behind every technological advancement, there is a team of engineers working hard
everyday.

5. The Sales Team

The first thing I noticed in the Sales Team is that they are very capable in speaking
English. Since they handle all communications in their world wide operations, it is definitely
obvious that they are competent in speaking the English language --the language known as the
medium for business.
