The rotating part

To prolong the bearing life, the rotating part with a
larger surface is made of soft carbon material. The
carbon disk is polished for optimum surface finish.

The stationary part

The stationary part is made of tempered stainless steel.
This segmented component is cast as a one-in-all cost-
effective unit. By design, each pad becomes flexible as
required for good functionality.
The segmented surface is finally polished to a specially
designed shape.

Rubber parts (seals and diaphragm)

Materials: Both NBR and FKM rubber parts are used.

Motor liquid
The motor is factory-filled with Grundfos motor liquid
SML-3.
Frost-proof down to –4 ° F (–20 °C).

Specification of SML-3

Corrosion protection
Grundfos motor liquid protects metals and alloys in
the equipment against all forms of corrosion. The
combination of low toxicity and FDA-approved
ingredients with a high level of corrosion protection
makes Grundfos motor liquid unique in the market.
The anti-corrosion performance is demonstrated
according to ASTM D 1384.

Compatibility and mixability

Grundfos motor liquid is compatible with most other
heat transfer fluids based on mono-propylene glycol.
Grundfos motor liquid should only be mixed with clean
water. The product can be delivered as a dilution mixed
with the proper amount of purified water.

Toxicity and safety

Grundfos motor liquid consists of FDA-approved
components for heat transfer fluids with incidental food
contact.
Exception: MS6RESDT30 motors are factory-filled
with demineralized water.

Approvals MS6

Approvals
Approvals in general terms
An approval should not be mistaken for a standard.
A standard is a stipulation/recommendation according
to which a motor has been developed and tested.
Whether a product fulfills the stipulations/
recommendations of a standard can be tested by an
independent third body, such as UL or CSA.
Approvals are required all over the world for a number
of different reasons.
Typically customers require approvals to be sure that
safety regulations, choice of materials, temperature
rise, etc. have been met according to a specific
standard.
An unloaded motor (in Grundfos, the load would
typically be a pump) is regarded as a component which
is the reason why the motor will normally "only" be
approved as a component. The user will then have to
secure a system approval afterwards. But this process
will of course be made much easier if the motor has
received a component approval from a recognized
validating body such as UL, CSA or others.

MS6 approvals
Status of MS6 approvals:
Approval Description Status
Approval by the Canadian Standards Association.
This approval means that the MS6 is a recognized electrical component for
the 60 Hz market, SF > 1.
cCSAus Pending
The "C" and "US" indicators adjacent to the CSA mark signify that the
product has been evaluated to the applicable CSA and ANSI/UL standards
for use in Canada and the U.S., respectively.
NSF61 North American approval for drinking water Will be applied for at a later stage

If the motor is repaired or reconditioned at a later stage,
the nameplate must therefore reflect the fact that the
temperature transmitter is not functioning, see fig. 18.

The rated frequency must not be exceeded.

Permissible frequency ranges: 30-50 Hz and 30-60 Hz.
A reduction of the frequency will often result in an
increased generation of heat in the motor even if the
motor load is reduced. The reason is that the reduction
of the power input will only be very small as the major
part of the power input of a submersible motor is
consumed to overcome the static head.

Operating conditions MS6

Soft starter
Grundfos only recommends the use of soft starters
which control the voltage on all three phases and which
are provided with a bypass switch.
Ramp times:
• Run-up time (until the voltage stated on the
nameplate is reached): 3 seconds.
• Run-out time: 3 seconds.
If the above run-up and run-out times are followed,
unnecessary heating of the motor is avoided.
Soft starter with bypass switch: Soft starters with
bypass switch will only be in operation during run-up
and run-out. This reduces both the load on the soft
starter and the energy consumption in comparison with
operation without bypass switch.
The soft starter must not be used in connection with
operation via a generator.

must be within the limits below:
• Maximum voltage unbalance: 2 %
• Maximum current unbalance: 5 %.

Start/stop frequency per hour

The MS6 is designed for continuous as well as
intermittent operation.

Frequency of starts and stops

Min. number of starts: 1 per year is recommended.
Max. number of starts: 30 per hour/300 per day.
Note: The maximum number of starts applies only to
the motor. The maximum number of starts may be
limited by the pump design. To ensure sufficient cooling
and lubrication of the shaft seal, the motor must be
completely submerged in the pumped liquid during
operation.
The MS6 can be installed either horizontally or
vertically. When installed horizontally, the shaft end
must not fall below the horizontal level. The use of a
flow sleeve is always recommended when the motor is
installed horisontally.
Most of the MS6 motors have a built-in temperature
transmitter for monitoring of motor temperature via the
