Applications MS6
Applications
Grundfos submersible motors are designed for a wide
range of applications such as:
• deep-well water supply
• irrigation
• groundwater regulation
• pressure boosting
• industrial water transfer and similar applications.
The MS6 is available in a wide range of variants to suit
different kinds of applications.
Recommended applications:
• MS6T30 for operation in common groundwater.
• MS6WT30 with tungsten-carbide/SiC bearings for
applications where horizontal operation is common
and turbine operation may occur.
• MS6RESWT30 for operation in aggressive liquids
with abrasive particles in applications where
horizontal operation is common and turbine operation
may occur.
• MS6EST30 for operation in neutral liquids with
content of oil and dissolved gasses.
• MS6REST30 for operation in aggressive liquids with
temperatures t < 86 °F (30 °C).
• MS6T60 for operation in common groundwater with
temperatures t < 140 °F (60 °C).
• MS6REST60 for operation in aggressive liquids with
temperatures t < 140 °F (60 °C).
• MS6RESWT60 for operation in aggressive liquids
with temperatures t 140 °F (60 °C) and with abrasive
particles in applications where horizontal operation is
common and turbine operation may occur.
• MS6RESDT30 for applications where a high degree
of process control is required, e.g. in chip
manufacturing. The motor is factory-filled with
demineralized water.

Corrosion protection
Grundfos motor liquid protects metals and alloys in
the equipment against all forms of corrosion. The
combination of low toxicity and FDA-approved
ingredients with a high level of corrosion protection
makes Grundfos motor liquid unique in the market.
The anti-corrosion performance is demonstrated
according to ASTM D 1384.

Approvals MS6
Approvals
Approvals in general terms
An approval should not be mistaken for a standard.
A standard is a stipulation/recommendation according
to which a motor has been developed and tested.
Whether a product fulfills the stipulations/
recommendations of a standard can be tested by an
independent third body, such as UL or CSA.
Approvals are required all over the world for a number
of different reasons.
Typically customers require approvals to be sure that
safety regulations, choice of materials, temperature
rise, etc. have been met according to a specific
standard.
An unloaded motor (in Grundfos, the load would
typically be a pump) is regarded as a component which
is the reason why the motor will normally "only" be
approved as a component. The user will then have to
secure a system approval afterwards. But this process
will of course be made much easier if the motor has
received a component approval from a recognized
validating body such as UL, CSA or others.
MS6 approvals
Status of MS6 approvals:
Approval Description Status
Approval by the Canadian Standards Association.
This approval means that the MS6 is a recognized electrical component for
the 60 Hz market, SF > 1.
cCSAus Pending
The "C" and "US" indicators adjacent to the CSA mark signify that the
product has been evaluated to the applicable CSA and ANSI/UL standards
for use in Canada and the U.S., respectively.
NSF61 North American approval for drinking water Will be applied for at a later stage

If the motor is repaired or reconditioned at a later stage,
the nameplate must therefore reflect the fact that the
temperature transmitter is not functioning, see fig. 18.

Soft starter
Grundfos only recommends the use of soft starters
which control the voltage on all three phases and which
are provided with a bypass switch.
Ramp times:
• Run-up time (until the voltage stated on the
nameplate is reached): 3 seconds.
• Run-out time: 3 seconds.
If the above run-up and run-out times are followed,
unnecessary heating of the motor is avoided.
Soft starter with bypass switch: Soft starters with
bypass switch will only be in operation during run-up
and run-out. This reduces both the load on the soft
starter and the energy consumption in comparison with
operation without bypass switch.
The soft starter must not be used in connection with
operation via a generator.

The run-up time of the motor is only about 0.1 second. = Rated maximum current x 0.58.
Direct-on-line starting is therefore normally approved by
the electricity supply authorities. The longest permissible start-up time for star-delta

Motor protection
MS6 motors are available with or without a built-in
temperature transmitter.
Motors with a built-in and operational temperature
transmitter must be protected by
• a motor starter with thermal relay or
• an MP 204 and contactor(s).
Note: MP204 not for 575 V use.
Motors without or with a non-operational temperature
transmitter must be protected by
• a motor starter with thermal relay or
• an MP 204 and contactor(s).
A Pt100 sensor is available as an accessory, see
Pt100 on page 48.

Service
The motors can be serviced at a Grundfos service
center.
If Grundfos is requested to service the motor, Grundfos
must be contacted with details about the motor liquid,
etc. before the motor is returned for service. Otherwise
Grundfos can refuse to accept the motor for service.
Possible costs of returning the motor are paid by the
customer.

MP 204
Product Description Product number
The MP 204 is an electronic motor protector and data collecting unit. Apart
from protecting the motor, it can also provide information via GENIbus,
like for instance:
• trip
• warning
• energy consumption
• input power
• motor temperature.
96079927
The MP 204 protects the motor primarily by measuring the motor current
by means of a true RMS measurement.
TM03 1471 2205 The pump is protected secondarily by measuring the temperature with
a Tempcon sensor, a Pt100/Pt1000 sensor and a PTC sensor/thermal
switch.
The MP 204 is designed for single- and three-phase motors.
See Product Information PI-076, Modular Controls, for further information.
MP204 not for 575 V use.
Zinc anodes
Product Description Product number
Cathodic protection by means of zinc can be used for corrosion protection 96421446
in chloride-containing liquids such as brackish water and sea water.
Sacrificial anodes are placed on the outside of the pump and motor as
protection against corrosion.
The number of anodes required depends on the pump and motor in
question.
Liquid temperatures:
Sea water: up to 95 °F (35 °C).
Brackish water (min. 1500 g/m 3 chloride): up to 95 °F (35 °C).
TM01 4431 0199 -TM01 4430 0199
Anode life:
The zinc anodes have a life of one to four years, depending on operating
1 conditions (temperature, flow and chloride content).
