Silhouette Drawing

Let’s now move to a

higher level of painting.
We wish to draw more
accurate drawings while
we have the option to skip
the details. A silhouette is
a solid shape filled with a solid single color, mostly black or white. The
shape can be a shape of person, a landscape, or an object. It is always
depending on profile view or front view of what we will draw. It cannot
be three dimensional, it depends only on two dimensions, length and
width. Silhouette drawing is the perfect practice you can do in this stage,
it depends on the application of most of the steps mentioned in the
previous subject. It cannot have, however, hue or tone, it is more like a
shadow of the object you’re willing to draw.

Silhouette Drawing can be more beneficial to artists who wish to work in

advertising, it can be useful, for instance, in logo design. The best tool to
draw silhouette is ink pen, because you will depend on solid filling
technique to fill the shape without color gradients.

Steps to draw the perfect silhouette:

Let us draw a silhouette of a profile view portrait.

1) Type “profile view” on Google images and pick any profile view
portrait you find suitable to draw. You can find examples of profile
view portraits on your course materials.

2) Set your ratios based on the profile you have, understanding ratios
will be easier after you finish “Anatomy” course.

3) In this phase, you need to acquire an ink or gel pen. Using your pen
draw an outline of your profile portrait. Try to draw any hair details
and draw simple lines to define the eyebrows and other eye details.
Make these internal details to look like cuts inside the silhouette.

4) Fill in the drawing area with solid ink.
