Paper #2 Assignment Instructions

The paper must be at least three full pages long, use 12-point font, be double-spaced, and
have one-inch margins around the page. Do not make a cover page. Use MLA format for
quotations. Your last name should be on the left side of the page numbers. If you use
secondary sources they must be from scholarly sites or books (for example, Wikipedia is not
a scholarly website). You must cite your sources. Remember, if you did not come up with
an idea yourself it needs to be cited, even if you put the idea in your own words. When
the only source is the required reading, you still need to cite the poem, novel, etc. that
you wrote about. Failure to include sources may result in a failing grade. If you write
about art, the artwork needs to be cited too. The Honor Pledge should be placed after the last
line of the text of your paper (if your paper is exactly three pages long the Honor Pledge
should be put at the bottom of the works cited page). The last page of your paper is the works
cited page (separate from the text of the paper but still numbered). Refer to the syllabus and
the LLT Writing Assessment Rubric (in Canvas) for information regarding grading.

Every paper for this class should have a thesis statement. The thesis establishes what the
point of the paper is, and should be a debatable statement. Another way to think of the thesis
is to consider it similar to a hypothesis. A hypothesis needs to be supported by evidence (in
this case quoting or paraphrasing the text) and analysis to be convincing. Even if you are
comparing and contrasting two texts, there should be a thesis statement. Do not simply say
there are similarities and differences. Keep in mind that your audience is familiar with the
text under consideration. Be careful to avoid simply summarizing the poem, story, etc. A
retelling of a story is not an essay. Email me if you have questions regarding your chosen
topic.

Papers must be submitted through Canvas by 11:59 p.m. 7/2. Please note that this is a
Thursday (the deadline is earlier in the week due to the 4th of July holiday). Choose one of the
following prompts to write about in your paper.
Prompt 1: Compare and contrast the two versions of “The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake.

Prompt 2: What did freedom mean to the Enlightenment thinkers? Use at least one of the
Enlightenment texts we looked at as a main source.

Prompt 3: There are actually two Frankenstein related options.

A: What is the role of women in Frankenstein?

B: Write about parent/child relationships in Frankenstein.

Prompt 4: Compare and contrast two Romantic Period paintings. You will need to include citations for
both paintings.
