Every paper for this class should have a thesis statement. The thesis establishes what the
point of the paper is, and should be a debatable statement. Another way to think of the thesis
is to consider it similar to a hypothesis. A hypothesis needs to be supported by evidence (in
this case quoting or paraphrasing the text) and analysis to be convincing. Even if you are
comparing and contrasting two texts, there should be a thesis statement. Do not simply say
there are similarities and differences. Keep in mind that your audience is familiar with the
text under consideration. Be careful to avoid simply summarizing the poem, story, etc. A
retelling of a story is not an essay. Email me if you have questions regarding your chosen
topic.
Papers must be submitted through Canvas by 11:59 p.m. 7/2. Please note that this is a
Thursday (the deadline is earlier in the week due to the 4th of July holiday). Choose one of the
following prompts to write about in your paper.
Prompt 1: Compare and contrast the two versions of “The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake.
Prompt 2: What did freedom mean to the Enlightenment thinkers? Use at least one of the
Enlightenment texts we looked at as a main source.
Prompt 4: Compare and contrast two Romantic Period paintings. You will need to include citations for
both paintings.
