Vickers ® TA/TB Cushions

Engineered for the durability required for medium-duty applications.

Cushion Location
Cushions are recommended when piston speed is in excess of 20-25 feet per minute. Cushions
decelerate the piston and rod assembly at the end of the stroke, lessening the noise and shock and
increasing cylinder life. Heavy loads attached to the piston and rod assembly should be stopped by
external means, such as shock absorbers, springs, decelerating valves, etc.
Cushion locations are viewed from Head end (mounting end of double rod cylinders). “–”in
table below indicates no cushion.
Cushions are not available in ¾” and 1” bores
Cushion adjustment location available at position #1 only on 01 mount (side lug)

Air cushions
The TA cylinder employs a flexible lip ring at the cushion chamber entrance. As the cushion collar
enters the cushion chamber the flexible lip of the super cushion blocks the direct flow of air to the
exhaust port. Exhausting air must now flow through a metered by-pass. Adjustment of the needle
valve in the by-pass controls the cushioning action

Hydraulic Cushion
The TB cylinder cushion collar is contact a floating bronze sleeve. This sleeve’s floating action
provides a very close tolerance seal contact without high loading. The sleeve seats against the head
and provides a very effective seal to trap the fluid. Consistent performance and long life are provided
since the radial loading on the sleeve is minimal .This sleeve can be easily replaced if required.

Super cushions: Flexible elastomer lip seal for air as shown or floating metallic sleeve for oil provide
positive cushion sealing with minimum wear and maximum piston acceleration on the return stroke.

This design has been engineered to provide the ability to tune the cushion performance for an
optimized deceleration profile. Our patented floating ring cushion seal or an alternate ball check
design allows maximum acceleration. This excellent acceleration profile translates into faster cycle
times and increased machine production.
The TA/TB cushions are designed to effectively stop the piston at each head for most applications.
There are, however some applications which require a little more trapped air/oil in the cushion
chamber to effectively cushion the cylinder. For these applications, T-J offers a longer than standard
cushion which can be fitted in the standard head without modifying the mounting dimensions. For this
option contact Eaton sales engineer.
