5.1 OVER HEAD SERVICE RESERVIORS (OHSRs).
Under this project, INTZE type OHSRs with column – brace staging are proposed for all
the seismic zones but if for the point of optimize of the structure for critical seismic zone i.e.
Zone-IV, the shaft type staging will be more economical as compare to the column-brace
staging. Hence an alternative for the staging for critical seismic zone can be adopted as shaft
staging rather than column-brace staging.
All the Over Head Service Reservoirs will be designed for the following structural
design conditions:
1. The Top Dome will be designed for Compression, the live load on the top dome will be
taken as 2 KN/m2
2. The edge beam will be considered as a part of free board. It will be designed for the
Maradonian Thrust and checked for the continuity analysis. Hoop force of water shall
also be considered to account for overflow condition and water heading up in
container.
3. The container portion of the service reservoir will be designed for the both conditions
as empty and full. Also, the container will be checked for the dynamic forces created
due to water in seismic activity.
4. The container portion of the service reservoir will also be designed for hoop forces as
well as for flexure due to continuity at junction with cone wall and top dome.
5. As per TD clause no. 7.27.4 the live loads on balcony will be taken as 2 KN/m 2.

and balcony and the weight of water on it.

7. The staging part of the service reservoir would be checked for seismic and wind
separately.
8. The foundation would be designed as Raft footing (With hole and without hole) with
ring beam and the thickness of footing will be checked for bending moments due to
wind and seismic separately.
9. All the components with contact in water would be designed for serviceability with
max. crack width 0.2 MM as per the provisions of IS 3370.

earth pressure mobilization and dynamic water loads as given in IS Code 1893 Part-
II:2014.;
6. Ground or partially underground structures shall also be checked against stresses
developed due to any combination of full and empty compartments with appropriate
ground/uplift pressures from below to base slab.

on the serviceability crack width limit state (i.e. up to 0.2 mm crack width) and other limits
including the ultimate limit states.

5.3.2 JOINTS IN STRUCTURE.

1. Construction Joints
2. Construction Joints in Floors
3. Construction Joints In Walls

5.4.2 MINIMUM THICKNESS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE MEMBERS.

The following minimum thicknesses shall be used for different reinforced
concrete members, irrespective of design thicknesses.

Table 10 Minimum Thickness for RCC Members.

S. No. Details of Structural Members Minimum Thickness (As per

Contract)
1 Walls for liquid retaining structures 200mm
2 Flat Roof slabs for liquid retaining structures 150mm
3 Spherical Roof slabs for liquid retaining structures 150mm
4 Bottom slabs for liquid retaining structures 200mm
5 Floor slabs including roof slabs, walkways, canopy 100mm
slabs
6 Wall of cables/ pipe trenches, underground pits etc. 150mm
7 Column footings at edge 300mm
8 Pre-Cast trench cover of Ferro cement 75mm

5.4.3 CEMENT MATERIAL.

Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) of Grade 43 conforming to IS 8112:1989 for
all other structures, in case of non-availability of OPC of Grade 43 contractor can use Grade 53
conforming to IS 12269: 1987 with the minimum cement content shall be as follows:
Table 11 Cement Material Content.

Concrete Grade Minimum Cement Content (kg/m3)

M-15 & M-25 As per approve mix design.
M-20 As per approve mix design.
M-30 (Water Contact) As per approve mix design.

Note: - “If the contractor intends to use the Ready-Mix Concrete, the ratio of the mix like water
cement ratio, admixture content etc. shall be as per approved mix design.”

5.4.4 MINIMUM REINFORCEMENT.

1. Minimum reinforcement in each of two directions for Walls, Floors and
Roofs of liquid retaining structures shall be as per IS: 3370-Part 2, Cl. No
8.1.1.

2. The minimum reinforcement for non-liquid retaining structures shall
be as per IS: 456.

Table 12 Minimum diameter of reinforcement bar for various members of structures.

S.no. Type of member Minimum diameter of reinforcement bar.

1. Slab 8 mm
2. Wall 8 mm
3. Footing 10 mm
4. Beam 10 mm
5. Column 12 mm

5.4.5 COVER TO REINFORCEMENT.

S. No. Members Cover (mm)

1 Slab 20
2 Beam 35
3 Column and Pedestal 40
4 Retaining wall, Basement and Pit 35
For Liquid retaining structures
5 Wall, Slab and Beam 45
6 Foundation 50

Note: - Roof Slab of CWR i.e. (Flat Slab) & Sump’s Roof will be designed for Water and cover for
Roof Slab will be taken as 45 mm.

5.4.6 INCREASE IN BEARING CAPACITY.

Increase in Safe bearing capacity of soil shall be as per clause 6.3.5.2 and
Table 1 of IS 1893 Part-1 2016, when the load combination Dead load+ Live load+ Wind / Seismic
load is governing the foundation design. The Percentages of increment in SBC are as below:
S.No. Soil Type % Increase Allowable
1 Type-1: Rock or hard soil 50
2 Type-2: Medium or stiff soil 25
3 Type-3: Soft soil 0

Classification of Types of soil for determination of increment in SBC has been done based on ‘N’
value. If the ‘N’ Value found less than 10, will be considered as soft soil. ‘N’ value 10-30 will be
considered as medium or stiff soil. ‘N’ value above 30 will be considered as Rock or Hard soil.

5.5 DESIGN CRITERIA FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL WORK.

Design of structural steel shall conform to IS 800.

5.5.1 PERMISSIBLE STRESSES.

Permissible stresses in structural members and bolts shall be as specified in
IS 800. Permissible stresses in welds shall be as per IS 816:1969.
