I. True or False. Write true if the statement is true, otherwise false. (3 pts.)
1. The sum of two invertible matrices of the same size must be invertible.
2. If A and B are square matrices of the same size such that det (A) = det (B), then
det (A + B) = 2det(A).
3. The matrix of cofactors of A is precisely [adj(A)] T.
4. If a linear system has more unknowns than equations, then it must have
infinitely many solutions.
5. If A and B are square matrices of the same order, then tr(AB) = tr(A)tr(B).
II. Perform as indicated.
1. Evaluate the determinant using cofactor expansion at 3rd row. (10 pts.)

5. Balance the chemical equation for the fermentation of sugar by first writing the
homogeneous system of equation and solve for the minimum value of t in the
general solution. Use Gauss-Jordan elimination. (20 points.)
C6H12O6 → CO2 + C2H5OH

6. Find the cubic polynomial y = a0 + a1x + a2x2+ a3x3 whose graph passes through
the points (-1,-1), (0,1), (1, 3), (4, -1). Write the system of equation then use
matrix inversion (by adjoint method) in solving for the coefficients. (20 points.)
