To optimize for performance and user experience based on bandwidth speed, HDM recommends 3 video file options are supplied per video creative. The dimensions and video bitrate ranges below
can be used as a guideline:

Video Dimensions & Bitrate

High Quality 1080p: 1920x1080 (max dimensions)
Max Video Bitrate: 3500kbps
Max Audio Bitrate: 128kbps

Medium Quality 720p: 1280x720

Max Video Bitrate: 2000kbps
Max Audio Bitrate: 128kbps
Aspect Ratio Only 16:9 pre-roll ads are used on Hearst Magazines Digital Media O&O properties
6, 10 and 15 seconds recommended.
Max Duration
30 second pre-roll only permitted if skippable.
Linear ads must respond when to the resizeAd() method to prevent a bad user experience and the appearance of the video jumping suddenly from a small to a large one. Ads need to scale and resize gracefully
Resizing
with the player and browser size.
SSL All creatives must be accessible over HTTPS via SSL. Using SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, will ensure that the data sent from client browsers to servers is sent in a secure, encrypted manner.
Cross-Domain Policies Creative files need to use an open cross-domain policy on the servers they’re hosted on. This will allow the files to be requested from domains other than that of the server the files are hosted on.
VPAID LINEAR ADS
An overlay or non-linear ad element can not persist over the video content after the pre-roll ends.
1. Block the standard Hearst player control bar.
2. Add custom contol elements to the player (Interactive elements are allowed).
Non-Linear Elements
3. Add countdown timers.
The HDM ad and sales team should approve all direct sold VPAID ads before the campaign flight dates. VPAID creatives should meet IAB standards and advertisers are responsible for ensuring creatives are
VAST 2.0 or 3.0 compliant.
VPAID creatives should NOT include a countdown timer or any player controls, as the MediaOS player uses its own player controls and advertising countdown timer.
VPAID: Player Controls & Timers
VPAID JavaScript should not override the volume or mute settings in the player.
VPAID: User Interaction JavaScript VPAID interactive elements in the ad can only be triggered by a click, not a hover event.
VPAID: Restrictions for Interactive Elements Text animations, logos or interactive elements in the lower 45 pixels of the video player are prohibited – to avoid obscuring or creating duplicative player controls.
Interactive elements and click-through links that navigate outside the player element must follow these requirements:
• If the click-through link pauses the video, the ad must include a resume play button over the video content so that the user can resume the ad and reach the content experience.
VPAID: Click-Through Links
• The VPAID AdClickThru event must called raised for video click-through links. If the ad handles the click through link directly, the destination URL must open in a new tab or window (not a modal) and can’t
replace the current window with the Hearst player.
If a VPAID ad encounters any custom errors, the errors should not prevent the standard IAB ad events from firing (AdImpression, AdVideoStart, AdVideoFirstQuartile, AdVideoMidpoint, AdVideoThirdQuartile,
VPAID: Ad Errors
AdVideoComplete). Ad creatives that fail to track standard IAB ad events are subject to removal.
Full-screen mode can not be triggered by the VPAID script, full-screen mode an only be user initiated.
VPAID: Ad Experience VPAID creatives should not set the z-index. If a z-index must be used in the creative, the z-index value cannot exceed 100.
Linear VPAID ads may not leave behind any content after the ad video completes and should not display any creative elements beyond the player width/height.
Linear VPAID ads must respond to the resizeAd() method when invoked.
VPAID: Resizing
Ad creatives should scale using a 16:9 aspect ratio when the player resizes to ensure a quality user experience.
