1A The main idea

1 A law forcing students to stay in school until 18 would benefit the poorest children.
2 New technology has an important place in the modern classroom.
3 Keeping unhappy students in the classroom causes problems.
4 Teaching through open discussion has a long and successful history.
5 Alternatives to academic lessons for older teenagers are needed.
6 Students who repeatedly misbehave in class need to be removed.

A This approach is rarely popular with parents. Also some governments have a legal
responsibility to offer the child some kind of education, and providing schooling for
individual children outside the main schools can be very expensive. However, a
young person who cannot follow rules stops the education of others, and can,
possibly, become a danger to those who are keen to work.

B Some of these students may not know anyone who has had a good education,
and therefore may not understand the positive effect of continuing in education as
long as possible. Some may be under pressure from home to enter the world of work
and start making money from a young age, even if the money they earn is very little.
Once they have had time to think, older teenagers may realise that it is better for
their long-term future to try to get financial help to go to university.

C There are many reasons for this. When thinkers from ancient Greece introduced
the teaching style of asking learners questions and listening to their responses,
people learnt to think for themselves. Independent thinking is true intelligence. Many
students today think they already know all the right questions, and just want simple,
one-minute answers, which does not encourage thinking.

D Not all 16-year-olds need to be in classes studying history or mathematics, where

they are likely to be unhappy and stop everyone else working. The key is education,
not classrooms, and their energy could be better used in learning a trade, such as
plumbing or building. In many countries, skilled and qualified tradesmen earn a good
wage, and build better, safer environments for everyone to live in.

E A teacher may have spent hours preparing lessons for the week, with clear goals
in mind. However, the second part of their job is also to manage the students in the
classroom, and if a student is preventing the others from working, it is the teacher’s
job to stop teaching and sort out the problem. The lesson does not get taught
properly and the other 29 students in class receive a lower standard of education.

F It has been clearly shown that people do their best work at different times of the
day, and computers, and particularly mobile technology, make the lessons available
24 hours a day. It has also been shown that young people today prefer to access
knowledge through videos, rather than text books. It would be wrong to ignore these
preferences when it is quite easy to include them in any lesson.

7A Something doesn’t sound right

Identify the incorrect words in the text and replace them with the words below.

Scientists create false memories

A smell of vinegar filled the air in the science laboratory and the light in the room
changed red. The mouse sat in the corner of its cage, quick stopped eating and looked
up. These were the warning signs. It ran to the safe of the black cardboard box, where
the danger couldn’t hurt it. The mouse reminded that these changes in the environment
meant which pain was about to follow. These signs always came before the electric
shocks.

Except that wasn’t true. The mouse had never been given electric shocks before in its
life. The memory was, in fact, not real.

Scientists at MIT had used genetic techniques to plant the memory in the mouse’s
brain before it was birth. They programmed the red light to set off the afraid part of the
brain. Whenever the animal saw the red light, or recognised the smell of vinegar, it felt
terrified, even there was nothing in its experience to explain why.

False memories are nothing new in science, and people have always been easily
persuaded to believe something happened when it didn’t. But creating them genetically
is very new. While sciences have no wants to use the technique on humans, they do
hope the experiments with false memories will help them to understand mental illness.

8B Build an essay
Some say governments should ban dangerous sports to reduce the
costs of rescuing people who have found themselves in danger,
and protect the lives of their rescuers. To what extent do you
agree?

In recent years, there has been an increase in interest in extreme

sports.

As equipment to go canoeing or scuba-diving becomes cheaply

available, people without enough training are getting themselves
into trouble.

It is unfair to punish everyone for the mistakes of a few, though.

This essay will argue that other solutions to the costs of rescues
need to be found.

There are many activities which put people in danger every day,
and extreme sports are not necessarily more dangerous.

Driving cars, eating a poor diet, smoking and taking no exercise are
all examples of activities which are likely to cause illness or
accidents.

In contrast, extreme sports are usually done by healthy individuals,

who are often careful to reduce the number of accidents.

As it is impossible to regulate against all dangerous activities, it is

unfair to ban extreme sports.

Clearly, no one wants to see members of the emergency services

put their own lives at risk to save others.

For this reason, there should be clear guidelines on just how much
rescuers are expected to do.

Although there will be times when the public feels that emergency
services have not done enough, if they work to rules there will be
less pressure on men and women to take unnecessary risks.

In conclusion, banning extreme sports is neither fair, nor practical.

Instead, governments need to revisit their opinion of what people

working in the emergency services are expected to do.
