PARTS OF A
COMPLETE ACTION ACTION RESEARCH
RESEARCH
TITLE OF ACTION Utilization of CompBAEF (Computer-based Activities in Excel Formula)
RESEARCH in improving Computer Literacy Skills in Empowerment Technologies
I. INTRODUCTION Microsoft Excel has been described as one of the challenging lesson
in Empowerment Technologies of the senior high school grade 11 curriculum
especially in General Academic Strand (GAS). The low exposure of learners
in using Microsoft computer application makes them more difficult to cope-up
with in the lesson.
The purpose of this action research is to capture and describe the
effectiveness of CompBAEF (Computer-based Activities in Excel
Formula) in improving Computer Literacy Skills in Empowerment
Technologies. From observation, students have performed poorly in
Empowerment Technologies. Some of the reasons attributed to the poor
quality performance of the students in computer was lack of engaging
instructional materials and interactive activity sheets for the computer-based
assessment of the students.
To address this problem, Reese (2011) suggested the need for
effective learning activities to enhance the interest of the students to learn that
leads to improved performance. He further said that these learning activities
must be centered to students where they can learn best when they are
personally involved in the learning experience. Through learner centered-
activities, students may work together, appreciate differences, build on
individual strengths, share responsibility for learning while engaged in the
learning process, and work toward learning by their own. Wilson (2010)
similarly stated that the development of an instructional material which
provides various learning activities can help the teachers to effectively deliver
instruction. This can help them also in boosting the interest of the learners to
improve their performance through self-reflection which is provided in the
learning activities. Thus, it is necessary for a teacher to always consider the
various activities given to the students to ensure the quality of learning.
A. Research Questions The primarily aim of this action research is to determine the
effectiveness of CompBAEF in improving Computer Literacy Skills in
Empowerment Technologies.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the performance of grade 11 students in excel formula
application?
2. Is there a significant difference between the scores of grade eleven
students in the test before and after the utilization of CompBAEF?
3. What are the implications of the findings of this action research for
the improvement of performance in excel formula?
B. Hypothesis There is no significant difference between the scores of grade eleven
students in the test before and after the utilization of CompBAEF?
II. BRIEF REVIEW OF The study is primarily anchored on the Theory of Learning by Doing
RELATED by John Dewey. This theory believes that students learn better when they are
LITERATURE AND actively engaged in the learning process. Learning by doing means learning

STUDIES from experiences resulting directly from one’s own actions. Dewey identified
learning by doing as the sole strategy for any kind of learning. He identified
education as a kind of experience, and through saying this he actually means
the same equation between what one actually does and the resultant
learning. So if a student learns how to listen and take notes from a lecture,
he or she only learns how to listen and taking notes. If afterwards the student
memorizes the lesson notes, the student learns how to memorize things.
Villamar (2012) similarly stated that learning is an active process in
which the learner uses sensory input and constructs meaning out of it.
Constructivism is basically a theory, based on observation and scientific
study - about how people learn. It says that people construct their own
understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and
reflecting on those experiences. People learn to learn as they learn where
learning consists both of constructing meaning and constructing systems of
meaning. Constructivist maintains that the learner needs to be empowered
and keep motivated.
On the other hand, Hatten (2012) asserted that interactive activities
help the students to get involved within the subjects. He also stated that
interactive learning is a hands-on approach to help students become more
engaged in the subject. Education seems to be constantly changing. Students
are no longer expected to sit at a desk and take notes on a lecture. Lessons
must be much more engaging and interactive. He further said that interactive
learning actively engages the students in wrestling with the material. It
reinvigorates the classroom for both students and the teachers. Lectures are
changed into discussions, and students and teachers become partners in the
journey of knowledge acquisition.
The researcher believes that activities with different learning
approaches in teaching and learning of the students will help to solve many
common students’ problems and boost the learning experience of students
and teachers as well. It can also help the teaching of Empowerment
Technologies more enjoying and interactive for students. Thus, there is the
necessity for the researcher to make an activity sheets to measure the
learners’ computer literacy level through this research study. Also, to boost
the interest of the students, the teacher needs an activity sheets that can help
to enhance the knowledge and skills of the students.
III. SCOPE AND The study will determine the effectiveness of utilization of CompBAEF
LIMITATIONS (Self Check Excersises in Formula Functions) in improving Computer
Literacy Skills in Empowerment Technologies of Grade 11 students of
Camflora National High School.
This study will be focused on the Grade 11 students of Camflora
National High School. The respondents will be given a researcher – made
activity sheets (CompBAEF). Likewise, they will be given a pre – test to
determine their prior knowledge before being subjected to activity sheets. And
afterwards, a post – test was given to them also. Moreover, CompBAEF are
limited to the topics of Empowerment Technologies in Excel Functions
Formula.
IV. METHODOLOGY The researcher will use experimental method of research with pre –
test and post – test design.

The independent variable of the study will be use of CompBAEF. The

dependent variables of the study are the students’ performance in terms of
Functions Formula. Through the pre – test and post – test it is expected that
students will obtain higher scores in the post - test than the pre – test. This
indicates the performance of the students before and after the use of
CompBAEF. There are thirty three (33) students for this study all from Grade
11 of Camflora National High School. All of the respondents were enrolled in
school year 2019 – 2020.. This study used students’ pre – test results, in order
to determine the prior knowledge of students about functions formula. The said
test is made up of 40 item questions to be answered for one hour. The post –
test was used to determine the performance of the students, consisting 10
item questions for COUNTIF, 10 item questions for VLOOKUP 10 item
questions for SUMPRODUCT and 10 item questions for INDEX and MATCH.
It is a teacher made – test with 40 questions covering the topic in Excel
Functions Formula. The test material will be test through a content validity by
systematic examination of the test content by the grade 12 students. The post
- test was administered to find out the performance of Grade 11 students. The
researcher will be request for approval from the school principal to conduct
and use the needed materials. Table of competency will be made before
constructing the pre – test and post – test. For content validity, the test will
present to the teachers. The CompBAEF activity sheets will be provided by
the researcher. For the validation of pre – test and post – test, it will be given
to last year Grade 11 shs handled by the researcher.
Statistical Treatment
These data will be treated and analyze using frequency count,
arithmetic mean, mean percentage score, and standard deviation. The data
analysis and will interpret using the t – test to find out the significant difference
between the tests before and after using CompBAEF.
