In order to achieve a desired goal, a leader chooses a particular type of leadership style

based on the complexity of the situation. Leaders should make a wise decision while
selecting a leadership style from a variety of leadership style. Choosing an inappropriate
or inconvenient type of leadership style would not only affects his performances but also
effects entire team which would ultimately effects organization. In this context, let us see
the two most prominent leadership strategies which are very in public
administrative domain. Transactional leadership style and transformational leadership
style. Let us see which leadership is more effective, in what type of situation they can be
used.

According to Avolioi, Walumbwa, and Weber (2009),transactional leadership is “largely

based on the exchange of rewards contingent on performance”. In other words, it is
giving and taking benefits relationship between the leader and the followers. Leader set
the desired goals to be achieve by the followers. These goals must to be achieved with in
the time and resource limitations. If the desired goals are met with in the limitations, the
performance of the employee is evaluated and would be rewarded.

An example of the transactional leadership can be seen in sports. A team management set
desire target to the team members, which is winning a contest (as per the rules and
regulations). If the desired goals are achieved, the performance of the players are
evaluated and would be rewarded or discharging from the play according to their
contributions in the result.

In transformational Leadership, leader drives subordinate in the direction of desired set

goals by clarifying each individual roles and responsibilities in the organization. In this
type of leadership, leaders use attributed charisma (inspire trust and respect in
subordinates ), idealized influence (promote belief), inspiration (convey belief and
expectation), intellectual stimulation (encourage creativeness) and individualized
consideration (maintain interpersonal connection with every individual team member)
technique in achieving the desired goals.
An example of transformational type leadership can be seen in fundraising events for
emergencies and disasters. The leaders of the events inspire trust and respect, promote
belief, convey expectations, encourage creativeness and maintain interpersonal
connection with the subordinate in the fundraising.

Opinion:

I believe, transactional leadership and transformational leadership are unique have their
equal importance and could be used based on the complexity of the situation. Both
leadership style has a common goal which is the leader drives his subordinates to a
desired goal. In my case being a lead test engineer, I use transformational type leadership
more often.

As a part of my job, I take the responsibilities to train the new hire test engineer, I always
treat my subordinates with respect and inspire trust. I promote belief, convey
expectations, encourage creativeness and maintain interpersonal connection to achieve
common goals.
