CIVL 4600

Assignment 1 Due: January 21, 2003

12”
A) For the cross section shown at left,
#3 Bar calculate d, the distance from the
“Stirrup”
extreme compression fiber to the
4-#8 Bars centroid of the tension reinforcement
24” (see p. 84 of your textbook). Note
that the “clear” spacing between the
2-#7 Bars
two rows of bars is 1.0 in. This cross

moment, i.e. compression at top,
tension at bottom. The tension
reinforcement consists of all the bars on the tension side of the member that run
parallel to the longitudinal axis of the member. Bar dimensions are given in Table A-
1 of your text.

B) For the frame shown above, draw free-body diagrams of Beams AB and BC
including the beam end moments (nearest kip-ft) and shears (nearest 0.1 kip). Use
the moment distribution method of analysis. Ib = 4000 in4; Ic = 6000 in4; E is
constant.

C) Beam AB shown at right has a clear span of 32 ft w=6.5 kips/ft

between the supporting columns. The uniformly
distributed load, w, supported by the beam is 6.5 A B

kips/ft. The beam may be modeled as shown in

ln=32’
the accompanying figure; the arrows indicate the
positive sense for shear and bending moment at A w
MA MB
and B. Neglecting axial load, the beam is statically
VA VB
indeterminate to the second degree. By
performing a frame analysis of the entire structure, you have already determined that
MA = –500 kip-ft and MB = –600 kip-ft.

• First, compute the shear and moment at midspan without drawing shear and
moment diagrams.
• Second, draw shear and bending moment diagrams for the span. Calculate and
clearly indicate important values of shear and bending moment as well as the
locations at which they occur (including inflection points).
D) Calculate the yield strain, εy, for a #5 bar of Grade 40 steel. What is the total force in
the bar at this level of strain?
E) What is the stress, fs, in a #7 bar of Grade 60 steel when the strain, εs, is 0.0018?
What is the force in the bar when the strain is 0.005?
F) A Grade 60 steel reinforcing bar is embedded along the axis of a concrete cylinder
with f’c = 6000 psi. The resulting composite member is subjected to an increasing
tension force (along the axis of the cylinder). Assuming perfect bond between the
concrete and steel, which will occur first: yield of the bar or cracking of the concrete?
Why?
G) Select a 4-digit alphanumeric ID that you would like used for the posting of your
grades. Write this ID next to your name at the top of the front page of your submittal.
