"2011"
First of all I need to thank the many friends and family
members for the very generous Christmas presents that I
received over the Holidays. What exactly I am going to do with
the six ton of coal that I received is uncertain at this time but
rest assured that Mikie is working on the problem.
For some strange reason, I am quite excited about the new
year ahead. Why I might get excited, when I don't have a clue
as to what will really happen ... I don't understand!! But I am
approaching the year with a positive attitude. I am positive
that the Corporate Jet will lose speed and gain the steering
control necessary to avoid being a black missile of
destruction. I am positive that the missus will continue with
her evening classes to expand her mind and shrink her body,
but will also fit in a cooking class for beginners!!
In the next few weeks we are also going to have a little fitness
promotion for the staff. It appears that the staff interest in
having Ossekeag supply pedometers to inspire more walking
is very high. We haven't worked out all the details for what
progress will get measured but anyone who works hard will
definitely benefit. The benefit for us in getting them into
shape is the ability to work the poor critters that much
harder. Thanks to Alex for a great idea.
I personally am going to wait for the butt-sitting contest!!
The unfortunate downside to this exercise challenge is that
the missus is going to plead for more walking time and even
less time on cooking lessons. A wife who is in shape but can't

My final reason for being so excited about 2011 is that the

deserves!! Six tons of coal buried a few feet into the ground

committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada
(COSEWIC) has just released an assessment of several
regional Atlantic Salmon stocks, and they have assessed the
Outer Bay rivers as endangered. The Hammond River, as a
tributary of the St. John River, is included under this
assessment. More details are available on the ASF website at:
asf.ca/news.
News from the Riverbank: HRAA staff were able to conduct one
more assessment of the digger logs we installed under a
HADD project on Colton Brook, and all have come through
the fall’s rain events in good shape. This may be the last
assessment we can make of the project until ice runs in the
spring. One note of interest was the significant spring inputs
we noticed on Colton that remained ice-free, with water
temperatures at about 6 °C. Even some of the aquatic plants
in the springs were still lush and green!
JC Cormier has finalized the dates for our annual kayak
fishing tournament: July 16th & 17th. There will be some
changes to the regulations this year, to allow alternate
launching locations.
Fly Tying Contest: Our sister organization, the Big Salmon
River Angling Association is offering a fly tying contest, to
obtain a fly to be used in one of their annual fundraising
events. The winning fly will be mounted in a shadow box and
presented at their annual Family Fun Days. The entrance
deadline is February 1st. The fly must be tied on a size 1 hook
(size one), and must be an original design. The winner will

ANGLICAN CHURCH ANNIVERSARIES

This year is going to be a
big year for our Church
community - the 225th
Anniversar y of the
Anglican Community
and 200th Anniversary of
Christ Church in
Bloomfield. In 1786, the
Rev'd James Scovil,
Kingston, started taking
occasional services in
what was called Norton
at the time, now called
Bloomfield. In 1797, two
and a half acres of land
was given to the church
by Loyalist Simon
Baxter, and fourteen
years later, on June 3rd,
1811, the Church
building was erected; it
was 30' x40' and was
used in the summer for services and finished in 1822.
In 1826, July 18th, Christ Church was consecrated as the
Parish Church by the Right Reverend John Inglis, and 34
persons were confirmed. In 1838, the Church building was
moved across the road to its current location and put on a
piece of land given by John Cook Hayes. The moving was done
by Isaac B. S. Raymond using 13 yoke of oxen!

2011
I begin the new year unsure of what it should be called. Are
we beginning two thousand and eleven, or is it more
appropriately referred to as twenty eleven? Certainly 1911
was nineteen eleven not one thousand nine hundred and
eleven. The same applies to 1811, 1711, 1611 etc. So let us
go back to the last new millennial, 1011. The only
historical event I can dredge out of my high school history
lessons would be 1066, the date of the Norman invasion of
England. I have never heard referred to as anything but ten
sixty-six. Those two thousands seem to have thrown
everything off! Language is an interesting thing;
meanwhile I still use both pronunciations at various
times.
There is something calming about winter, once the snow
falls. I am not into the cold (or heat for that matter), but I
love the winter landscape. As a kid my brother and I spent a
lot of hours outdoors, building snow forts, sliding, skating
on the flood plain of the brook if the weather conditions
co-operated. I am able to recapture a little of those days
now with my grand-daughter, who is nearly five. We did
some shovelling together over the holidays, followed up by
building a snowman and later going sliding. Remember Cats are ready
