History of Psychology
1 John 4:16-21 [16] And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and

The Study of the soul

 Ology – means study

All the principles of Mental Health must come from the Bible. Humanism is Paganism, the principles
are very close to Gods but they take man and place him in the place of God.

Forms of Mental Illness


 Depression is one of the most common forms of Mental Illness
 Headache
 People under 45 are more likely to have some form of mental heath issues.
 There is very little difference between male and female, white or black.
 100 years ago they said that universal education was predicted to be able to remove all
social problems. Worldly education has failed.
 If psychology is so good then why do Psychologists going to Psychologists.
 There are over 200 type of treatment for mental illness.
 Mental illness has been found to be more common in 1st worlds countries then there are in
the 3rd world countries.

Nature of Man
There are three basic concepts on the nature of man.

1. Man is innately good


a. Comes from Paganism

Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye
shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

b. To know is to do – this came from Greek philosophies

c. Mind is good, and body is evil – God like
d. In 1879, a German mental philosopher said it was time to get into scientific study.
And made the first laboratory.
e. Greek paganism is the worst form of paganism, as it is high and noble as compared
to the more primitive forms.
f. During the renascence in the 15C there was a revival of the Greek thinking.
g. Non-Directive Therapy – by Carl Rogers
h. Mormon Church is the most pure form of Greek paganism. They believe that the soul
pre-existed the body and when we die our soul returns to God, and we become God.

2. Man is innately evil


a. In the 18C there was a lash back on the innately good concept
b. Augustans view was we are born with original sin. We are born with the guilt of
Adam on our shoulders.
c. Seventh-day Adventist view is we are born with a predisposition with the weakness
to sin.

Ex 32:31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and
have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee,
out of thy book which thou hast written. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned
against me, him will I blot out of my book.

The one that does the sin dies Ezek 18:20.

3. Man has no inherit moral tendencies or is amoral


a. Tabular rasa – no moral disposition
b. Impurities view
c. John Lock, David Hue, David Hearty
d. Our whole destiny is shaped by the environment.
e. Dr B. F. Skinner – was the most famous of the people who promoted this kind of
thinking.
f. Before the birth of Skinner and Rogers EGW condemned both views.

Behavior modification – The Bible does not teach this. {Matt 7:22} – Lord, Lord, we have done
things in your name, Jesus say I don’t know you. Meaning that just by changing the behavior, or
works doesn’t change the heart.

A Christian wants character transformation, not behavior modification.

CE 6 In households and in schools the education of children should not be like the training of dumb
animals; for children have an intelligent will, which should be directed to control all their powers.
The dumb animals need to be trained; for they have not reason and intellect. The human mind must
be taught self-control. It must be educated to rule the human being, while the animal is controlled by
the master. The beast is trained to be submissive to his master. The master is mind, judgment, and
will for his beast. A child may be so trained as to have, like the beast, no will of his own. His
individuality may even be submerged in the one who superintends his training, and the will is, to all
intents and purposes, subject to the will of the teacher.

Salvation
A. Nature of man

B. Salvation is a gift

C. Give your life to the Lord


 Revelation 3:20 - The Lord is knocking

Commitment: As the Holy Spirit has quickened your conscience, you have seen something of the evil
of sin, of its power, its guilt, its woe; and you look upon it with abhorrence. You feel that sin has
separated you from God, that you are in bondage to the power of evil. The more you struggle to
escape, the more you realize your helplessness. Your motives are impure; your heart is unclean.
You see that your life has been filled with selfishness and sin. You long to be forgiven, to be
cleansed, and to be set free. Harmony with God, likeness to Him--what can you do to obtain it? It is
peace that you need--Heaven's forgiveness and peace and love in the soul. Money cannot buy it,
intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to
secure it. But God offers it to you as a gift, "without money and without price." Isaiah 55:1. Will you
accept His offer?

The Power of Choice
From MCP p 11 – The true principles of psychology is to be found in the scriptures.

Choice
Both Christianity and psychology are divide on this point. In Christianity they are divided on
freewill and predestinated.

GC 505 “God declares: "I will put enmity." This enmity is not naturally entertained. When man
transgressed the divine law, his nature became evil, and he was in harmony, and not at variance, with
Satan. There exists naturally no enmity between sinful man and the originator of sin. Both became
evil through apostasy. The apostate is never at rest, except as he obtains sympathy and support by
inducing others to follow his example. For this reason fallen angels and wicked men unite in
desperate companionship. Had not God specially interposed, Satan and man would have entered into
an alliance against Heaven; and instead of cherishing enmity against Satan, the whole human family
would have been united in opposition to God.”

Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think [of
himself] more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to
every man the measure of faith.

God has to interpose by giving all a measure of faith, to see if we would chose God or not. We
believe in Free will, He gave as choice.

Nahum 1:9 What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise
up the second time.

We all have to make a choice to show our loyalty but we will always have the choice.

Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive
abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

Without receiving the gift of Grace, and gift of Righteousness, we won’t have life. We were created
innately good, but now we are innately evil. There is a restoration principle but we have to receive
it, we have to live it.

a. These are the free-willed, but not necessarily the same kind as the religious type.

1 Pet 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit,

Elected due to foreknowledge. Not behavior modification – character transformation

SC 18 It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to escape from the pit of sin in which we are sunken. Our
hearts are evil, and we cannot change them. "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one."
"The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
Job 14:4; Romans 8:7. Education, culture, the exercise of the will, human effort, all have their proper
sphere, but here they are powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of behavior, but they
cannot change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life. There must be a power working from
within, a new life from above, before men can be changed from sin to holiness. That power is Christ.
His grace alone can quicken the lifeless faculties of the soul, and attract it to God, to holiness.

SC 18 “The Saviour said, "Except a man be born from above," unless he shall receive a new heart, new
desires, purposes, and motives, leading to a new life, "he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3,
margin. The idea that it is necessary only to develop the good that exists in man by nature, is a fatal
deception. "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." "Marvel not that I said
unto thee, Ye must be born again." 1 Corinthians 2:14; John 3:7. Of Christ it is written, "In Him was
life; and the life was the light of men"--the only "name under heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved." John 1:4; Acts 4:12.”

Velm Hont – He opened a lab in Eastern Germany. There is a reason why they wanted to take away
the history of psychology as being a philosophy and make it a science.

Mental Health in the Creation


The determinist view came from the idea that in science every time you pour NlCh on to Zn you
always produce H. However we can confirm a hypothesis, we cannot prove anything we can on
confirm. They wanted to be able to say based on a cause there is a predictable result.

The common Reductions Theory


Psychology can be understood sometimes by knowing Physiology but then it is said we need to
understand this in the light of Physics. Now they say we need to study at a Sub-atomic level. There
were four main areas were Psychology changed from the philosophy to a science.

In the Image of God
Personality
We all have different personalities, we act different we look different, but its much more then just
temperament. It’s the total aspect of our lives that are presented to the rest of the world. Sometimes
when people are interested in each other they show very different aspects of their lives before they
are married, but after they are married they become a “little” different. You may not see everything
the person is when you are too focused on making them your life partner.

As Christian we need to learn to see the person for their character, not so much their personalities.

This is the construction of the Greek Pagans, this is how the defined the personality. It was based on
the dominate flood. As Christians we should not be involved in this.

 Sanguine – Blood
o Optimistic, happy, pleasant
 Choleric – Yellow Boil
o Angry, violent
 Melancholic – Black Boil
o Never looks happy, kind of down
 Phlegmatic - Flam
o Laid back

There are three types used now, they based them on;
 Typologies
o Was introduced by Carl Tung, he was the first to find the Introvert – Extrovert.
There are two main times of introverts, those who are withdrawn because of past
experience, as compared to those who by nature are more comfortable being alone.
He then come up with (Ambivert) – someone who is in the middle.
o After Carl Tung, Kretschmer came along and he found that body build determined
personality. Asthenic (More skin and bone then fat), athletic (muscle), Pyknic (Fat).
He found that the tall skinny (asthenic) was more an introvert.
o Sheldon came along and found there was some true in that as well (body shape)
 Indomorphy – (Fat) Selfish, pleasure seeking, extrovert.
 Mesomorphy – (Muscle) – Dominating assertive, fearless, athletic
 Ectomorphy – (Skinny) – Thinkers, cautious, aloft, tense, somber.
 When he was looking at body type it was on a 7 point scale. A scale on each
type. You would get a number on each scale.
 Traits
o They used all the traits found in the dictionary and made a traits list and that
became the assessment.
 Continuum
o There was the idea to make a ten point scale.
o 1 2 3 | 4 5 6 7 | 8 9 10
o I E
o It was found that there was more a bell shape for personality.
Our personality can affect our witness.
 Personality – Is the interment in how we present the character
 Character – Needs to be Christ like

Mental Health and Christianity
Religion is a cause of mental health –
 Saul allowed negativity to change his state of mind (the crowed wanted David as king, feeling
of rejection).
 Man of Romans 7 – the issue is sin (Rom 7:17)

There is a threefold balance as Christians, Body, Mind, and Soul. If any of these is out of balance,
then there is potential for mental illness. We have to have a balanced life.

The most common form of mental illness is depression. Christ was never troubled by praise of
criticism. Depression is normally based on egocentric issues.

There are two kinds of mental illness


1. Functional
2. Structural (organic)

If you are guilty then you well nearly always, there is depression. We become maladaptive, prone to
anger. All have biological difference and some are prone to weakness in these areas. What texts do
you point them to?

Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he
trusteth in thee.

1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful,
who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make
a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].

1 Cor 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the
mind of Christ.

Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

2 Pet 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might
be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

We have to believe these promises if we are to have any hope. We need to pray for the mind, love,
hope, and faith of Christ. People are trying many things to day to remove guilt, or consequences.
Things like abortion are a classical example.

Mental health in the Seventh-day Adventist church


Being Perfect – Many teach the sin and live, by doing this it brings guilt. Sinning breaks the
connection with Christ, which then brings guilt, we are able by faith, able to claim the promise of 1
John 2:1.

Character – What we are, controllable by Gods grace, thoughts


Reputation – How we are perceived, it is not controllable, works

If we put emphasis on reputation we start to lose our character

John 18:29-36 [29] Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this

Commitment: While treatment options-including medication and counseling-are available,


prevention is the better choice.Why is prevention preferable rather than treating a problem after it
arises? Although treatment often works, it usually is much more costly. The costs often include
financial losses, physical-health deterioration and trauma to family members-sometimes resulting
in family disintegration. Many mental illnesses can be prevented, and the Bible provides helpful
information to that end. After all, it is a handbook from God on what we should think and how our
minds should work. Among other things, the Bible tells us how to relieve stress and the kind of
stimuli we should allow into our minds. Will you allow God to guide, protect and heal you from the
cares of this world?

Love Abideth Still
Love and mental health
Love is a principle and it comes from a converted human heart. Every human being craves love. All
humans have a need to be loved.

Love and Sin


All of us have a tendency to sin, if unconverted we will sin. Sin only comes if we have knowledge, if
we don’t know what is right we don’t sin. However each one of us has a responsibility to learn what
true is what sin is. In our natural state we are self-centered. Babies very young as soon as they learn
to coordinate begin to grab for things, anything they can’t tell the difference between what’s good
or bad. Whatever they pick up they end up putting it in their mouth. There is a certain leave of
egocentric behavior with a child.

Sharing is one of the best principles to teach a newborn, we have to have the child learn a selfless
attitude at a young age. The foundation of love is selflessness. When we sin there is a separation
from God, because there is selfishness. Because selfishness is so common, true love is very
uncommon.

Mental Conditions
 Schizophrenia
o Suffering from multiple personalities. The main reason is the person is unable or
unwilling to relate to the real word and turns inward and leaves in a make believe
world. They turn to self, its all about me.
o There are three types of Schizophrenia that are very hard to tell the difference
apart;
 Functional Schizophrenia – From drug flashbacks, it’s very temporary. Can
be very physical they don’t know how they act.
 Organic Schizophrenia - Genetic
 Demon Possession – You will see miracles
 Paranoia
o A feeling that people are after you people are talking about you, you can still live a
normal life but everyone is against you. They are talking about me, its all about me.
 Megalomania
o Insane lust for power. Not all slaughters people. It is far more common in men then
women. The people have a real egocentricity out look on life. They want power and
control.
 Kind and helpful
 Controlling dictator
o This is usually seen in the home or in the work place.
 Masachioin
o A liker of pain towards themselves, more common in males. They might cut their
wrist not to die but to get attention. The parents will get angry after awhile, so they
go further to get their attention, and most times they end up dying. Some think they
need to punish themselves. It’s another form of Turing inwardly.
 Hypochondriac
o Someone who thinks they have all the medical conditions. They believe they have
imaginary illness.

o There is another kind of person who has a desire to have operations, it has a
different name.
 Suicide
o Some people keep repeating over and over again that they will kill themselves.
There is a lot of self pity.
o Try and get them to talk about the future, take their mind off the present.
 Depression
o The wife normally feels it during middle life, after the children leave home. The
husband needs to be very supportive during this time. This is the most common
forms of self pity, feeling sorry for ourselves, the counsel is to get out and help
someone else.
 Psychosis – The person doesn’t not know that they are being affected.
 Neurosis – Depression, the person understands how miserable they are. But they don’t
seam to find the answer for it.

Organic mental illness – Brain malfunction or damage


Functional mental illness – Willfully chosen tendencies

How to deal with depression


There are two kinds of depression
 Acute – Temporary
 Chronic – Long term

Some of the reasons for depression


 Failure – Personal expectation not meet
 Finanical – Loss of funds, or lack of funds
 Death – Unable to accept death
 Birth – Hormonal imbalance
 Guilt – Produces depression

Usual when people are depressed the behavior goes to either extreme. This is usually noticeable
because of mood changes.
 Eating habits –
o The more someone is extravert – eat more
o The more someone is introvert – eats less
 Social relationships –
o Some can’t stand to be along
o Some can’t stand to be around anyone at all
 Music –
o Is used to go up or down

Some of the wrong ways to deal with depression;


 Drinking alcohol – retardant to thinking so you think you forget your problems
 Drugs etc

Nero conductions
Based on the conductions of the skin everyone
has some kind of basics movement. When
people are excited the wave moves higher, the

adrenaline is rushing, that which goes up must come done. God created us to have peace,
contentment. The coming down is usually slower then the rise. In reality we have ground to catch
what we through up, but with the human mind we don’t have this, so the fall goes bellow normal
and falls to a point of depression.

The person they try to re-stimulate the emotions by


giving an unnatural stimulant. This action creates habits,
and this can form manic-depressive. Which is known as
cyclothymiacs, there is a very set pattern for these kinds
of people, may be 10 days of just, 4 days of depression,
they often miss the middle, normal state.

If you observe these people over a long time you will find
that the happy time shortens then the depression
increases. Entertainment is like a drug because it uses
adrenaline which enters the blood stream which
requires exercise to remove of the body.

How Ellen White dealt with Depression

If We Confess our Sins…
Dealing with Egocentrically personalities
We should have contentment in all things because when we have the mind of Christ then self is
dead. And then a dead body cannot be hurt. Dead people are affected by nothing, not words, not
actions. We need to die daily so that we can have the mind of Christ in us.

We don’t have power because of egocentric goals. President Obama is the most powerful man in the
world at the moment, but come Jan 2013, he will have lost all that power when he is replaced. Self-
worth does not come from looks, or ability. Many of our goals have finite limitations. Only when we
surrender to Christ, can we have infinite possibilities. It is a good test to see how close we are to
Jesus, how do we respond to failure, to hardships, are we balanced and depended on Jesus, or are
we upset and worried. If we could get self out of the way, we would have not depression or anger.
We would be free. Despondency is bondage, because when we enter into this we have lost our faith
in Jesus, all things work together for good to them that believe. If things don’t go the way that we
want them to go, then we lose faith in Jesus.

Phil 2:3-4 [3] Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of
one mind. [4][Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each
esteem other better than themselves.

The key is to work for others; this is how we overcome self. How do we react when trouble comes?
Do we defend self? If we are then we are not trusting in Jesus.

We love others because we love Christ, but we love Christ because He loved us first.

With many of our school it is more then likely that they will either be legalistic or antinomianism. It
is very rare to have the perfect blend of law and love.

How to deal with guilt


The world says there is no other religion in the world that destroys the esteem of a man then
Christianity. They say things like “all have sinned”, “our righteousness is like filthy rags.” We need to
have verse that can show that Christianity is the only religion that can deal with guilt.

We need to know the link between sin and guilt.

Lev 6:4 …because he hath sinned, and is guilty…

There is no mention of feeling, there is always going to be guilt where ever there is sin.

Ps 51:3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me.

Until you acknowledge your sin, you will never confess your sin. If we have done something wrong
to others we need to do our best to ask forgiveness. We need to preach more about sin and the
remedy for it.

immoral features, and assuming a Christian guise. Formerly it denounced Christ and the Bible; now it
professes to accept both. The Bible is interpreted in a manner that is attractive to the unrenewed
heart, while its solemn and vital truths are made of no effect. A God of love is presented; but his
justice, his denunciations of sin, the requirements of his holy law, are all kept out of sight. Pleasing,
bewitching fables captivate the senses of those who do not make God's word the foundation of their
faith. Christ is as verily rejected as before; but Satan has so blinded the eyes of the people that the
deception is not discerned.

We are lacking the connection between sin, guilt, forgiveness and confession.

Dealing with people who believe that they have committed the unpardonable sin. The first things is
that if they are so worried about it is proof that God is still working on them.

Frustration and Conflict


This type of problems can come from real situation or imaginary. We need to handle these things
the way that Christ would handle it. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to control our will.

There are a few types of barriers that can bring frustration;


 Personal Barriers – Disabled people have physical barriers.
 Interpersonal Barriers – Involves one or more people, racism.
 Physical Barriers – Car accidentals, no money

How do we handle these things?

Approach-Approach Conflicts - This type of conflict results when we are faced with a situation
involving two or more mutually exclusive acts, both of which are expected to result in positive
consequences. In everyday human experience this conflict could involve such incidences as, on a
beautiful summer day wanting to go swimming at the beach or alternately driving into the cool of
the mountains, or wanting to finish a special project while also desiring to visit and fellowship with
friends.

Approach-Avoidance Conflicts - These conflicts result when we face a decision, the result of
which will have both positive and negative consequences. Thus, while reaching the goal will have
desired results, there will also be undesirable results associated with it. This conflict can readily be
exemplified in our physical activities. Perhaps we want the benefit derived from a cold shower but
also want to avoid the negative sensation of coldness. Or we want the benefits of vigorous exercise,
but want to avoid the pain of aching legs and heaving lungs. You cannot get the positive without
first having the negative.

Avoidance-Avoidance Conflicts - These conflicts result when we are faced with a decision that
cannot be avoided, when either choice results in negative and painful consequences. This conflict is
by far the most difficult to resolve. It is well exemplified in the experience of the child who is

unhappy at home and is subject to frequent mistreatment. This is like if you get the mark you die, if
you worship the mark you get God’s death decree (Revelation 13-14).

Encounter and Sensitively Group therapy modalities


Even though Psychology began as a science over 150 years ago it is still far from being an exact
science. There are always new ideas coming up in this field.

People come in together normally around 12-20 male and or female. They spend time together and
in the encounter setting which has no future (so that you are not distracted) there is carpet on the
floor and some times you have pillows on the ground, and it is always in a circle. Then there is a
leader who begins to speak positively to the members to speak frank with each other. Most of the
people who come to this session are normally have problems. As the sessions go by the frankness
gets more open and open. After a while the leader says I feel so inhibited by clothing, let’s take our
clothing off. Most will do it, then the few that have not, then the group mentality takes over, they
start to pressure the few to over come their fears.

Kurt Lewin (le Veen)


Over 40 years ago he started encounter group therapy. This method came from America. In the
group they were matched with someone else from the group. They had to tell each other everything
they thought about each other just by meeting them. How can you be helped by negativity? He
started his work in the National Training Lab in the USA. They became known as T-groups. They
became the flavor of the day among Christianity even in the Seventh-day Adventist church during
the 70s, 80s and 90s. In these groups there is always a group of people holding hands, this concept
comes from the idea that you get strength from humanity.

Carl Rogers
Started Non-Direct Therapy, this has a pagan background we just ask questions and draw out the
wisdom within the soul, the good is in side you it’s just a matter of getting it out of the patient. He
was the first to start up encounter groups.

Charles Schutz
He was one of the worst therapists to use the encounter groups methods. He wrote a book called
Elements of Encounter.

God gave us the power to think and to act. There is now many forms of hypnosis. One of the most
common in the Seventh-day Adventist church is NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Hypnosis had its modern foundation in the research and writing of Anton Mesmer (1734–1815),
the Austrian mystic and physician. He formed what is now called mesmerism.

Magnetism
Mesmer believed that illness was due to a lack of magnetism, and that a strong, healthy person
could heal by the rhythmical massaging of the sick person, allowing magnetic strength to be
transferred to the patient.

Hypnotism
This is also called suggestive. A kind of examples are telling people to walk a straight line and then
suggest them that they are going to fall over. Talking very fast to someone can bypass their
judgment and they will just accept your statements, this was something Dr Desmond Ford was very
good at.

They are told it helps you to be a better pastor and to bring more and more people to the Lord this
is also used in selling books. In 1990 at the GC in Indianapolis, they changed the term from NLP to
Lessening Skills. The program was started by in Sans Jose State University in CA, Grinder and
Bandler. Grinder was a professor at this university he was dealing with mathematical linguistics.
Bandler came from a middle class home; he was known to be bright but not well adjusted. He
enrolled to be a student in this university, but he brought all mind ideas, and he brought this to
Grinders teaching. And this was called NLP. There is not much known about Grinder, but there is a
lot about Bandler he was into Coke and Drugs, he would intimidate people. He was doing a lecture
and in the middle of the talk he pulled out a gun that was loaded and cocked and made a grown man
cry. He was charged with murder of a friend’s girlfriend. There were only three people in the room,
so they both got off because they could not tell who did it. They wrote a book called “Frogs into
Princes.” In this end time EGW said that many minds will be deceived.

As a counselor you are always being told of negative things so if all you are dealing with is
negativity then your mind is not thinking upon the good things. This is why so many of these people
commit suicide.

Christian Therapy
L.A.W. – This is said to the bases of all therapy
Love, Assurance, Worthiness > this sounds like a good idea, but the way this was used was not
according to the Bible. They bring in a family member and have them tell them how loved they are.
However then they go into self indulgence.

There is only so much a child can take. You can only tell them so many times that they are good for
nothing. You can’t hide the wrong but deal with them the way that Christ deals with you. Pray with
your child.

Character is made from thoughts and feelings not from our words. Our words are the result of what
we think and feel.

Temptation is not sin but sin (not all sin) comes from within our own physiology.

Evocation (initiation of action) OR Response = (Learning) x (Drive or motivation). Our actions are
the result of leaning and motivation based on the learning. If there is not motivation there is no
response.

There all kinds of motivations that leads to the same


response. This is why God judges in the intent of the heart.
Example, the women that gave two mites, the Pharisee and
the publican, Not ever man that says Lord, Lord - God does
not judge by the amounts but by the motives.

We learn based on repetition, therefore it is possible to


break a habit.

Partial reinforcement – e.g. going from 10 packs a day to 3 to 1 then hopefully none.

Sensation vs Perception
Sensation – what you see
Perception – what you interpret the sense to be
Veridical perception – seeing what has gone to your eyes – this is a one on one relationship.

Non-veridical perception – interpretation of the sensation – this is a lot to do with horizontal verse
vertical. This is when most of us are confused by allusions.

Example – When you look in a room the person closes to you is larger then the person in the back of
the room. That means the brain has to interpret that no in fact the two are the same size. So the
brain is always making adjustments.

What would happen if we didn’t have sense? We wouldn’t last long. When we lose a sense, it’s
remarkable how the other senses develop to take up the lack.

Off all the senses the most devastating to lose is the hearing. People who are normally deaf they
develop paranoia, a feeling that people are after you people are talking about you, you can still live a
normal life but everyone is against you.

Sensors are the avenues to the soul, these is how Satan gets to the brain. If we don’t feel it, it won’t
affect us.

In the 1950 Dr Kinsey became one of the best known names in the USA. He was so active in
promoting sex before marriage. He wrote two books, about sex, one for males and one for females.
In the end he was found to be a Homosexual. By opening this door it creates a lot of stress for those
who have children before marriage, and this affects your mental health.

Abortion is one of the most destructive forms of mental health. Dr Miller from Boston led a
campaign which the Whites support, and it put laws against abortion.
