5th AFTER TRINITY Genesis. 25:19-end, Psalm. 119:105-112, Romans. 8:1-11, Matthew. 13:1-9; 18-23
Now our new and different way of life is beginning to settle down a little, and shops, pubs and other
businesses are opening their doors once again, this week’s readings are so timely in their richness and
deliciousness. Dive in and see if they speak to you as they do to me, of God versus mankind. Division
versus dwelling in unity and peace in Christ Jesus, who offers us life and peace. Not that it should be an
either or, as God wants to work with us, however it is our fallenness and sinfulness which makes us
want to work against God.
This reading from Genesis is still as relevant today as it has been since Rebekah bore Isaac twins Esau and Jacob. She was
barren, and Isaac prayed to the Lord, and the Lord granted his prayer. But before they were even born, whilst they
were growing in her womb, they struggled with each other, representing two divided nations. I find myself bemused
when reading this passage, not just because it is so descriptive, but it resembles what amounts to a normalised family sit-
uation where two children can be so different. Consequently, a conversation we might have ourselves amounts to: ‘ooo,
and the first one was all red and hairy like a big coat, then the second one came out clutching onto his brother’s heel, like
he was using the first as a hoist or something. Fancy that, and the dad is sixty y’know. Twins, at sixty! Or so such gos-
sip goes. The boys grew, and when they were older the first twin Esau sold his birth right, his future inheritance, to Ja-
cob for a bowl of lentil stew. Sibling rivalry. Many of us have been there: “let me have what you’ve got. Give me some”
………. “Ok, but you have to give me all the contents of your piggy bank first” ………. “Yeah, yeah, anything. I’m starv-
ing, oooooh I’m gonna die, quick, quick” ………“Your piggy bank” ……….“Here, have it, now give me the stew”……….
“Ok, deal, there you go. Like taking milk from a baby”. One nation exercising calm and wise judgement and candid
stealth, against a nation who was reckless and irresponsible, prepared to squander everything in its eagerness for immedi-
ate gratification, and bodily satisfaction. Jacob was a quiet man living in tents, so probably contemplative, reflective, with
an unspoken Godliness about him, versus his wild and brutish twin. The Spiritual versus the flesh.
This is where it links in with our Gospel reading. Where Jesus explains the importance of holding fast to himself, who is
both Word and Spirit. It’s not often that Jesus explains his parables and so we are fortunate here that Jesus explains the
meaning of this particular parable to the disciples, which is about those who hear the word of God and then what they
decide to do with it. The invitation here is for each of us to answer the question “Where would we place ourselves in
this parable?” However, in order to do this, we need to answer a series of other searching questions first. Such as what
if we don’t understand what is sown in our heart through the word of the kingdom? The ‘word’ being Jesus. How do
we establish deep and firm roots, to endure trouble or persecution? What are the thorns and cares in our lives which
lure us away from and choke the word? How do we prepare our hearts to be good soil, to hear the word, to under-
stand, and therefore to bear fruit?
Well if we look to our reading from Romans, Paul tells us that the Spirit of life in Jesus Christ sets us free from sin and
death. When we walk in the Spirit rather than trust in our own earthly mortal flesh, the self that is the weak human be-
ing, then God dwells in us and we are made strong. The ‘weak made strong in the saviour’s love’ as the worship song
says.
Read the verses from this week’s psalm in light of this, remembering always that Jesus is the light to guide us and will nev-
er fail us.

Scams
Sylvia Swan reported that she had received an email purportedly from Archdeacon Sam, asking whether she could assist
her with a task. I replied asking for details. The reply to me said that rewards were to be given to people who had been
helping out during the pandemic. Would I buy some Amazon vouchers as thank you gifts?

At this point I checked the email address, which was clearly bogus, and did not reply. Subsequently I heard from Sam as Warden of

Not so good news. Barbara Lythe phoned to say that Francis Iseton is back in hospital after a fall at home, it seems
she fell onto her bedside cabinet and demolished it then fell through the wardrobe door! Sounds very nasty so keep her
in our prayers please. Edna Harrison phoned to let me know that Audrey Coulson had also fallen in the bath and
been laid in an empty bath all night until she was found by her daughter, Edna said that Audrey had had a minor hear at-
tack!
Linda had a nice letter from Margery Harrison this week saying thank you for the newsletter, how she enjoys hearing
news of the Church family and being able to follow the church service. She also enclosed a generous contribution to-
wards postage, thank you Margery.
I had a telephone conversation with Doreen Revell on Friday, she was astounded by an article she had read in her
newspaper about how face masks and sanitisers were being transformed into fashion items such as a crocodile leather
and silk cover for face masks for a mere £290, Kate Middleton’s favourite face masks 3 for £32 or you can transform a
small bottle of sanitiser into a necklace by buying a fancy sleeve for £65 (gold chain not included)! Ladies latex rubber
gloves 99.99% guaranteed against all viruses and reusable only £175! She said it reminded her of the war when rich folk
would fancy up their gas mask cases, she had the cardboard box and string like most other folk. I leave you to your own
judgement on this! She did say that Arthur would have had an opinion on this but he always had chest problems and had
he still been with us she would have been very worried about him. God bless him, he was the most wonderful of men
and my inspiration for my intercession prayers. Doreen did say that for a time he did edit the parish magazine and I am
sure that like everything he did will have made a good job of it.
Happy Birthday to Poppy Turner who will be 16 years old on 21st July 2020.
