Semester: Spring 2020 Max Marks (Part 1): 20
Date: July 03, 2020 Total Time (Part 1): 90 min
Instructor: Tauseef Ahmed

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) This test has two parts. The total allotted time includes 60 minutes for solution and 30 minutes
for online submission of the solution for PART 1. Manage the time accordingly. No extra time
will be awarded.
2) Attempt all questions. The final exam consists of two parts (Part 1 and Part 2) with each part
carrying 20% weightage. The total weightage of the final exam is 40% towards the final evaluation
3) Attempt this exam with your own handwriting. Solution should be neat, clean and legible.
4) Write your Name, Registration Number and Section at top of each page and sign each page
before submission.
5) Solve on blank pages, scan the handwritten pages and make a separate PDF file for each part.
Submit the solution PDF file on respective exam page.
6) Check the sequence of pages and the orientation of scan/ picture are correct and readable.
7) In case of technical issues, email the solution file from your university email within allocated time
to instructor at tauseef.ahmed@cust.edu.pk
8) Mention your full name, registration number and section clearly in your solution file, file name and
email subject.
9) Students are required to duly fill, sign and attach/send the “Honor Statement” with their solution
files.
10) In case of any issues, contact instructor on tauseef.ahmed@cust.edu.pk, online on Teams.
11) Exam attendance shall be marked on portal during the exam.
12) Any two identical answer sheets may lead to award of zero marks for the both students.

PART-A
Question No. 1. (CLO – 1 (C4)/ PLO-2)
(10)
Figure-1 as shown below represents a SDOF system, consider mass m = 9Kg,
a) Determine the value of ‘k’, the stiffness, such that the force transmitted to the base
due to the forcing frequency =10 rad/sec is 1/10 of the force magnitude f o
b) If the forcing frequency  is has been changed such that it cause the above SDOF
system to oscillate at its natural frequency, suggest modifications to the system to
avoid resonance

PART-B

Question No. 2. (CLO – 1 (C4)/ PLO-2) (10)

A centrifugal pump impeller has an imbalance mass of 10 Kg. The centrifugal impeller
foundation has the following damping ratio and stiffness coefficient values of 0.05 and 4500
N/m respectively. The mass of impeller is 190Kg. Determine the radial location of then
imbalance for pump vibration amplitude of 0.1 at resonance. In order to 50% reduce the
vibration of pump also calculate the how much mass be added to the pump impeller.
