• Gas dissolved in liquid: This type of solution is formed when the solute is gas
and solvent is liquid. E.g. carbonated drinks, air (oxygen) dissolved in water of
water bodies (in which aquatic animals breathe).
• Gas dissolved in gas: This type of solution is formed when the solute and solvent
are both gases. E.g. air (mixture of different gases).
4. Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks are the three types of
rocks. Give three examples of each, with at least one use.
Igneous rocks:
• Granite: used as building material.
• Obsidian: used in making jewellery and ornaments.
• Pumice: used to make lightweight building material.
Sedimentary rocks:
• Sandstone: used in making buildings.
• Shale: used in making cements and bricks.
• Limestone: used in making whitewash, paint, and cement.
Metamorphic rocks:
• Marble: used in making statues and ornamental purposes.
• Slate: used in making bricks and cement.
• Quartzite: used in glass and ceramic industries.
5. Minerals are used in different forms in our daily lives. Some of them are given
below:
• Minerals are used as building material. Certain minerals, such as gypsum
and calcite are used to make building materials such as mortar, cement, and
concrete.
• Minerals give us useful metals. Several minerals or group of minerals are rich in
metals such as magnetite is rich in iron, and bauxite is rich in aluminium. Such
minerals are called ores. These ores are used for extracting metals which are
further used for making cooking utensils, machine parts, electric wires, coaches
of trains, and airplanes.
Precious metals, such as gold, silver, and platinum are used for making ornaments
and jewellery.
• Minerals are used as gemstones. Several attractive minerals such as diamond,
ruby, emerald, sapphire, and topaz are used as gemstones. These minerals are
found in the form of crystals. When polished, they appear beautiful and shiny;
thus they are used in making jewellery.
• Minerals serve as fertilizers. Some minerals, such as sulphates and nitrates, are
added as fertilizers to the soil. Fertilizers help plants grow better.
Rock salt, chalk, and talcum powder are made from rocks too.
• Minerals serve as a part of our diet. Our body needs some minerals such as
calcium, sodium, and iron, although in very small quantities, for healthy growth.
