10. Preliminary Design of Pavements:

The existing pavement is of flexible type all along the project corridor. The new Pavement
has also been considered as Flexible Pavement. However, in case of Toll Plaza location,
Rigid pavement has been adopted.

10.1. Adopted methodology for Pavement Design:

The methodology adopted for Pavement Design as per the Schedule B included the
following:

10.1.1. Scope of pavement design:

The pavement design involves the following aspects:
(i) Design of the new pavements, both new carriageways/widening portion
(ii) Pavement design for service roads, slip road and Toll Plaza location

10.1.2. Design Alternates for Pavements:

The entire project corridor has been designed for Flexible pavement. However, to
optimize structural thickness, an alternate design has been done with cement treated
sub base for main carriageway, slip road and service roads.

10.1.3. Design Standards for Pavement Design:

Following design standards are followed
(i) Design considerations are based on IRC:SP:84-2014, “Manual for
Specifications and Standards for Four Laning of Highways Through Public
Private Partnership”.
(ii) The new flexible pavements for main carriageway, service road and slip road
are designed as per guidelines of IRC 37:2018, “Guidelines for Design of
Flexible Pavements”.
(iii) Rigid pavement for Toll Plaza is designed as per IRC 58:2015, “Guidelines for
the Design of Plain Jointed Rigid pavements for highways”.

10.1.4. Design Methodology:

The design methodology included the following:-

Design inputs: Following design inputs have been considered in the pavement
design.
The following parameters were considered in the design of flexible pavements:
(i) Design period: For flexible pavement the design period is considered as
15 years as per Clause 5.4 of Schedule B.
(ii) Design Traffic: The Design Traffic for a design life of 15 years in terms of
equivalent standard axles in million (msa) has been considered as 150
msa for Main Carriageway, 50 msa for Slip Roads and 10 msa for Service
Roads as per Clause 5.5 of Schedule B.
(iii) Design Sub-grade Strength: Sub-grade strength has been considered as 8%
as mentioned in Clause 5.6 of Schedule B.
(iv) Design of New Flexible Pavement by IRC Method: The pavement design has
been done by considering above mentioned data and by using IRC:37-
2018.
(v) Design of Rigid Pavement: The pavement design has been done as per
available data and IRC: 58-2015.

10.2. Design Recommendations for Flexible Pavement along

Main Carriageway, Service Road and Slip Road:
The recommended pavement layer details have been provided in Table 10.2. The detail
analysis of data has been provided in Appendix B:
