1.0

INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE

This document is limited in its application to low-rise residential construction in reinforced concrete such as bungalows, semi-detached houses and link / terrace houses.

2.0

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this document amongst others are as follows:-

i. To serve as a design tool for preliminary frame scheming and member sizing

ii. To serve as a verification tool to automated computer generated design outputs by the designer or her peer reviewer

iii. To serve as an invaluable tool for quick alternative designs during project design team meetings and workshops

iv. To serve as a quick design guide for the visiting Project Design Engineer at site should a scenario which questions the correctness of her drawings arise

The author wishes to emphasize that this design document only serves as a quick design and analysis aid to experienced structural engineers that have, in the course of the years, mastered the rigours of manual hand-based structural analysis and calculation, and is not a substitute for sound engineering knowledge and experience.

3.0

ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITATIONS

The design solutions presented herein make the following assumptions:-

i. section design is based upon BS8110 plastic design of sections

ii. only singly reinforced section designs presented, doubly reinforced sections are not included

Further considerations that need to be addressed by the designers are, but not limited to, as follows:-

i. lateral stability

ii. disproportionate collapse requirements

iii. robustness

iv. p-delta effects

The design solutions presented herein are NOT suitable for employment on structures that are also subject to the following effects:-

i. large-strain dynamic effects, e.g. earthquake designs which necessitate the implementation of capacity design principles which stipulates firstly the optimum location and sequence of attainment of member capacity (e.g. attainment of beam plastic moment capacity prior to attainment of column plastic moment capacity in moment frame lateral stability systems) and secondly the favourable mechanism of deformation (e.g. elemental attainment of plastic moment capacity prior to elemental attainment of shear capacity)

GEOMETRICAL PARAMETERS

The effective spans of simply-supported, continuous and cantilever elements are as per cl.3.4.1.2, cl.3.4.1.3 and cl.3.4.1.4 BS8110, reproduced herein as follows:-

cl.3.4.1.2 Effective span of simply-supported beams The effective span of a simply-supported beam may be taken as the smaller of the distance between the centres of bearings, or the clear distance between supports plus the effective depth.

cl.3.4.1.3 Effective span of a continuous member The effective span of a continuous member should be taken as the distance between centres of supports. The centre of action of support at an encastré end should be taken to be at half the effective depth from the face of the support.

cl.3.4.1.4 Effective length of a cantilever The effective length of a cantilever should be taken as its length to the face of the support plus half its effective depth except where it forms the end of a continuous beam where the length to the centre of the support should be used.
