Dialogue - Giving directions

When giving directions to someone it is best to use short basic English

sentences. Speak slowly when talking to the other person and spell out words if
they don't understand and if possible draw a map.

1 A: Excuse me, where’s the bank?

B: OK … Go straight ahead, and the bank’s on the left, across from the supermarket.

2 A: Excuse me. Is there a post office near here?

B: Yes, there is. Go down this street … and it’s on the corner.

3 A: Excuse me, where’s the museum, please?

B: The museum? Well, turn right here, and it’s on the left, next to a café.

4 A: Excuse me, is there a movie theater around here?

B: Yes, there is. Turn right, then turn left, and the theater is on the left.

Where is the hotel?
*Go straight ahead one block on Market Street, the hotel is on your right.
*The hotel is across from the movie theater.
*The hotel is between Market Street and Long Avenue.
Try it-
Excuse me, where is the police station?
Is the school near the restaurant?
Where is the central station?

TIPS II

Speak slowly so the other person can write down the instructions if talking on
the phone.

When speaking with someone, use your hands to demonstrate what you
mean, left, right, or straight on.

Always try and use the word "please" when you are asking someone for
directions. It's polite, and people are more likely to help you!
