What I Need To Know

Hi! I am teacher Katty and I will be

guiding you in this Self Learning Kit. At
the end of this SLK, you should be able
to:
1. Analyze routine and non-routine

problems involving addition of

fractions.

2. Create different ways or solutions in

solving routine and non-routine

problems involving addition of

fractions using appropriate problem-

solving strategies and tools.

3. Solve patiently routine and non-
routine word problems.
4. Display love in doing one’s work or
activity, for example by solving word
problems.

2
WHAT I KNOW

Before we proceed with the Self-Learning Kit,

answer the following questions as self-assessment in
this topic.

A. Directions: Give the sum of the following

fractions. Reduce the answer to lowest
terms whenever possible.

3 1 3 2
1. + 6. 5 + 5
5 5

11 2 7 3
2. + 7. +
16 16 10 10

3 4 2 10
3. +8 8. 11 + 11
8

4 1 1 3
4. +7 9. 10 + 10
7

7 2 3 9
5. +9 10. 13 + 13

REVIEW
B. Give the least common multiple (LCM) of the following:
1. 4 and 5 _______________________
2. 3 and 6 _______________________

WHAT’S NEW

ACTIVITY 1

Concept Mapping
This activity will help you think about your daily life observations.

Have you seen a roll of plain cloth?

a. Where do we usually see them?
b. Where do we usually use these cloths?

WHAT’S IS IT
DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY 1

1 2
Mrs. Martin bought 5 m of white cloth and m of blue cloth. How
2 5
many meters of cloths did she buy in all?

a. How will you solve the problem?

b. What is asked?
c. What are the given?

4
Let us illustrate the problem using models.

1 2
2 5
d. What operation should be used?
e. What number sentence can you write?
1 2
f. What kind of fractions are 5 2 and 2 5 ?
g. How do we add fractions and mixed number?

Hello! How is the activity? What do you

1 5
notice from the models? Note that 5 2 = 5 10 and
2 4
= 10 .
5

From the given models we can formulate

steps on adding fractions and mixed numbers.
1. From the models illustrated, you can see
1 2
that we need to convert 2 and 5 into
similar fractions, where 10 is the LCD of 5
and 2.
• Get the LCD by listing method, then
divide the LCD to the denominator
and multiply its result to the
numerator; the product will
become the new numerator. Copy
5 the LCD as the new denominator.
1 𝟓
5 = 2,4,6,8,10,12 => 𝟏𝟎
2
2 𝟒
= 5,10,15,20 => 𝟏𝟎
5

2. Add the whole numbers before the

fractional part.
5 4 9
5 + =5
10 10 10
3. Reduce the answer to lowest terms if
possible

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
BIG IDEA

Adding or subtracting similar fractions is simply getting the

sum or difference of the numerator, then copying its common
denominator. If the fractions are dissimilar, change to similar
fractions and perform the needed operation.
2 1
Example: Add 8 7 + 2
2 4
8 7 = 8 14 Align the fractions.
1 7
+ = Find the LCD and rename them as
2 14
11
8 14 similar fractions.
11
Answer: 8 14

WHAT I CAN DO
Now that you have learned the concept of Adding
Fractions and Mixed Numbers, it is now time that you apply it to
the real world.

Diretion: Solve the problem using the four step process.

1 1 1
family. She mixed 3 cups of water, cup of orange juice; and
2 4 2
cup of pineapple juice. How many cups of liquid did she mix in
all?
Understand: Solve:

a. What is asked? ____________________ _____________________

b. What are the given facts?__________ _____________________
Plan: Answer:
______________________________________ _____________________
