Comparing Sibling
As a child, I remember everyone always comparing me to my sisters. They
compared everything about us including our heights, weight, grades, athleticism, etc.
Since my middle sister and I were close in size and age, my mom constantly dressed
us in the same clothing. Over and over, people would ask if we were twins. How I
dreaded that question. I wanted to be seen as an individual not as someone’s twin. I
have two older sisters and we are totally different even today.
Parents constantly compare their kids; however, all of your kids regardless of
how many you may have are unique. They have different ways of learning, thinking,
and communicating. They also have individualized personalities and to compare
siblings would be doing them a great injustice. Children want to be loved
unconditionally and they want you to be proud of them--just the way they are.
The constant comparison of siblings can lead to sibling rivalry, jealous, and
disrespectfulness towards parents. It can also lead to children being more susceptible
to peer pressure, and lead them to base their identities on others instead of who they
were born to be. They also may become upset with one another and feel as if one
sibling is favored more than the other. Comparing siblings can also lead to feelings of
inferiority and it can cause them to question their self-worth.
We know it is natural for a parent to compare their kids, but before you make
those comparisons, think about the following:
*How you would feel being constantly compared to someone else?
*What are your child’s unique strengths, gifts, talents and abilities?
*Are you encouraging and embracing their individuality?
*What are your children’s perspectives on their places in the family? (Good girl, trouble
maker, smart one, athlete, leader?)

WHAT IS DanceDanceRevolution?
This program is an opportunity to promote good health for all
students and to demonstrate how active video game activities can
be utilized in school and at home. The “tournament” also
represents an opportunity for your school to take part in an
alternative statewide competition where the first place students
from each age division win college scholarships while promoting
the importance of participating in healthy physical activities. The
2010 DanceDanceRevolution Hawaii State Championship
Tournament structure is:
Eligible Divisions:
Elementary Division: Students in Grades 3-5
Middle School Division: Students in Grades 6-8
High School Division: Students in Grades 9-12
