9.  Define decay constant (lambda) of a radioactive substance. How is it related to half‐life? 
10. Two capacitors, of capacitance 6µF and 10µF are charged to potentials 2V and 5V 
respectively. These two charged capacitors are connected in series. Find the potential across 
each of the two capacitors now. 
11. You are given the resistors X and Y whose resistance is to be determined using an ammeter 
of resistance 0.5 ohm  and a voltmeter of 20 kohm. It is known that X is in the range of a few 
ohms. Which of the two connections would you choose for resistance measurement? Justify

12. A microwave telephone link operating at the central frequency of 10 GHz has been 
established. If 2% of this is available for microwave communication channel then how many 
telephones may be simultaneously granted if each telephone is allotted a bandwidth of 8 kHz.

is halved (ii) visible light of longer wavelength is used? 
17. An angular magnification of 30x is desired using an objective of focal length 1.25 cm and an 
eye‐piece of focal length 5 cm. How will you set up the compound microscope? 
18. Name the 3 quantities conventionally used to specify the earth’s magnetic field. 
The angle of dip at a location in South India is about 180. Would you expect a  
greater or smaller dip angle in Britain? 
19. A rectangular loop of sides 8cm and 2cm with a small cut is moving out of a region of 
uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.3 T directed normal to the loop. What is the voltage 
developed across the cut if the velocity of the loop is 1 cms‐1 in a direction normal to the (i) 
longer side (ii) shorter side of the loop? 
20. A sinusoidal voltage of peak value 483 V and frequency 50 HZ is applied to a series LCR 
circuit in which R = 3Ω, L = 25.4 mH, C = 796 µF. Find (a) the power dissipated in the circuit (b) 
the phase difference between the voltage across the source and the current (c) the power 
dissipated in the circuit (d) the power factor (e) the frequency at which resonance occurs (f) the 
impedance, current and power dissipated at resonance. 
21. Why does the capacitance of a capacitor increase on introducing a dielectric into it?  
22. Draw a labelled diagram of a full wave rectifier circuit. Explain briefly the functions of its 
components. Sketch the input and output waveforms. 
23. With the help of a labelled diagram, explain the working principle of step‐up transformer. In 
an ideal transformer, number of turns in primary and secondary are 200 and 1000 respectively. 
If the power input to the primary is 10 kW at 200V, calculate (i) output voltage (ii) current in 
primary.

26. Derive an expression for refractive index of a prism of angle A.

27. In the circuit shown below, R represents an electric bulb. If the frequency of the supply is
doubled, how should the values of C and L be changed so that the glow in the bulb remains
unchanged?

An air cored coil L and a bulb B are connected in series to the ac mains as shows in the given
figure :

The bulb glows with some brightness. How would the glow of the bulb change if an iron rod
were inserted in the coil? Give reasons in support of your answer. 
 
28. (i) With the help of a schematic sketch of a cyclotron explain its working principle.
Mention its two applications. What is the important limitation encountered in
accelerating a light elementary particle such as electron to high energies ?
(ii) A particle of mass m and charge q moves at right angles to a uniform magnetic
field. Plot a graph showing the variation of the radius of the circular path described
by it with the increase in its (a) charge, (b) kinetic energy, where, in each case other
factors remain constant. Justify your answer.

29. (a) Derive the relation 1/f= 1/v-1/u for a biconvex lens. How is the approximate value
of the focal length of such a lens estimated in the laboratory ?
(b) A beam of light converges to a point P. A lens is placed in the path of the
convergent beam 12 cm from P. At what point does the beam converge if the lens is
(i) a convex lens of 20 cm focal length and (ii) a concave lens of 16 cm focal
length ?

30. With the help of a circuit diagram explain the working of a n-p-n transistor as an
amplifier in common emitter configuration and draw its frequency response curve.
A transistor has a current gain of 50. In a CE amplifier circuit, the collector resistance
is chosen as 5 kilo ohms and the input resistance is 1 kilo ohm. Calculate the output
voltage if input voltage is 0.01 V.
