Course Code Biosystems and Control Course Type LP

Course Objectives:
 To introduce system approach used to analyse biological processes.
 To gain experience in mathematical modelling of the biological processes.
Course Outcome:
 Students will be conversant with the basics of control theory.
 Students will be able to design the mathematical model of a biological process using computer programming.
 Students will be able to determine the characteristics of a system using computer programming.

1 Introduction: 9 a, c, e
Elements of control systems, concept of open loop and closed loop
systems, Examples and application of open loop and closed loop systems,
brief idea of multivariable control systems. System concepts applied to
biological world. Steps in biosystems modelling and data analysis.
2 Mathematical modeling using system approach: Representation of 9 a, b, c, e, k
different systems by differential equations, Determination of transfer
function by block diagram reduction techniques and signal flow method,
Laplace and Fourier transforms and using them in to solve mathematical
equation; transfer functions; poles and zeros; transient and steady state
response. Z-transforms.

PID controllers. Stability. Bode design. Dynamic behaviour and PID


control of first- and second-order processes. Applications to biological
systems.
3 Time Response Analysis of systems: Characteristic Equations, response 9 a, b, c, e, k
to step, ramp and parabolic inputs. Transient response analysis, steady
state errors and error constants, Transient & steady state analysis of LTI
systems.
4 Stability and Algebraic Criteria: Concept of stability and necessary 9 a, b, c, e, k
conditions, Routh-Hurwitz criteria and limitations. Root Locus Technique:
The root locus concepts, construction of root loci.
5 Frequency Response Analysis: Frequency response, correlation between 9 a, b, c, e, k
time and frequency responses, polar and inverse polar plots, Bode plots.
Stability in Frequency Domain: Nyquist stability criterion, assessment of
relative stability: gain margin and phase margin, M and N Loci, Nichols
chart.

List of experiments:
1. Familiarization with MATLAB Control System tool box and SIMULINK.
2. Finding pole, zero, gain values from a transfer function and vice versa.
3. Determination of step and impulse response for a first order unity feedback system
4. Determination of step and impulse response for a second order unity feedback system.
5. Determination of step and impulse response for type ‘0’, type ‘1’, type ‘2’ systems.
6. Determination of Bode plot using MATLAB control system toolbox for 2nd order system & obtain controller specification parameters.
7. Determination of root locus plot using MATLAB control system toolbox for 2nd order system.
8. Determination of controller specification parameters for 2nd order system.
9. Determination of Nyquist plot using MATLAB control system toolbox.
10. Study the effect of PI & PD controller on system performance.
11. Design of mathematical model of biological phenomena based on control system.
Mode of Evaluation:
The assessment and evaluation components may consist of unannounced open book examinations, quizzes, student’s portfolio generation and assessment, and
any other innovative assessment practices followed by faculty, in addition to the Continuous Assessment Tests and Term End Examination.
