About

Aerocraft is a RC Plane Competition organized by the student chapter at Federal

Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT). The competition is scheduled to be
held during the month of February 2020.

This competition requires students to design and fabricate a RC Plane capable of

performing a set of maneuvers. The 1-day competition will begin with qualifying
rounds wherein the top 60% of the teams will advance to the final round
scheduled to be later the same day. Winners will receive exciting cash prizes and
certificates.

RULES
Team Structure
Teams must contain a minimum of 6 students and a maximum of 10 students, and
one RC Plane. Teams may include students from multiple schools, however
Professional competitors, faculty, advisors, or non-students are NOT permitted.
Participants are required to provide school/college ID card for verification.

Registration
ALL team members must first register. Following individual registration, the team
captain must register the RC Plane in the Aerocraft Competition.

Design Constraints
• The plane must fit easily inside a box with dimensions of 1m x 1m x 1m.
• Propeller diameter should not be greater than 10 inches.
• Battery weight should not be more than 150 gm.
• Only electrical motors are allowed.
• The use of IC engines or any such other means of providing thrust is
prohibited.
• Use of gyroscopes (gyros) and programming assistance in receivers is
prohibited.
• Only one team member may operate the aircraft.
• Note: Failing to meet the required design constraints will result in reduction of
50% points for that round for the team.

Abstract Submission (Design Report)

• All teams must submit an abstract on their aircraft, which should be no longer
than 15 pages (A4 size 1.5 line spacing) with standard formatting.
• The Abstract must document the basic design of the aircraft (dimensions,
wing areas, velocity, etc.),
• The Abstract must document how the design is suitable for given problem and
should also contain basic graphs such as Cm vs α and CLvs CD of the airfoil
used.
• The Abstract must include photos of the plane during the manufacturing
phase.
• DEADLINE for Submission:

COMPETITION FORMAT
The competition requires the participants to design and fabricate an RC Plane (no
Readymade Planes or RTF’s are allowed) and perform a set of maneuvers.
Propellers, Motors, ESC, Servos, Receiver, and Transmitter are allowed as off-the-
shelf items.

Qualifier Rounds
The best measure of the design of an aircraft can be done by climbing and gliding
time.

• Round 1: In this round, teams are required to direct their aircraft to climb for
15 seconds. Once completed, teams will need to perform a dead stick flight
(throttle=0 or Gliding) and land the airplane safely in one piece (If the propeller
breaks during landing, it will still be considered a safe landing otherwise the
feat will not be considered). The plane will take-off from a 15m circle and is
required to land in the same circle. The pilot will be standing inside the circle
the entire time (from take-off till landing).
o Score: Teams will be awarded points based on the glide time of the
aircraft and the landing.

• Round 2: After completing the gliding task, the pilot will be escorted to
another area where he/she will complete additional take-offs and aerial
exercises where the team will be timed.
o Score: Points will be awarded based on minimum time taken to
complete the task.

Total Score
Total points for the qualifying rounds will be the sum of Round 1 and Round 2. The
top 60% of the teams will be qualified for the final round.

Final Round
The playing field / arena will consist of various gates and poles. Beyond the starting
line, there will be two gates, arranged in a diagonal manner. The pilot will be
required to maneuver the airplane through these gates and then through a set of
poles after which the pilot will then be required to make a U-turn, proceed back
through the poles and another gate and land the plane in the designated landing
zone.
• Step 1 - Take Off from “Take Off Zone” = Mandatory
o Score: 10 points
• Step 2 – Maneuver the plane through Gate 1 and Gate 2 (The heights are
5m and 4m respectively and will be arranged in a diagonal order (The
distance between these gates will be 10m)).
o Score: 50 points (Gate 1) and 100 points (Gate 2)
• Step 3 – Maneuver the airplane around the extreme far pole and make a U-
turn.
o Score: 120 points
• Step 4 – After completing the above two tasks, the pilot will need to
maneuver the airplane so that it passes through Gate 3 (The height of this
gate will be 6m).
o Score: 200 points
• Step 5 – Approximately 20m beyond Gate 3, will be a circular landing zone.
Pilots will need to successfully land their plane in this zone.
o Score: 50-300 points
Note - Points for landing will be awarded on the basis of the distance between the point of
first contact of landing and the center of the designated landing zone. Less the distance,
more will be the points.

Total Score
Total points for the final round will be the sum of Steps 1-5. The top 3 teams will be
identified. Note: If any teams have the same number of points, the ranks will be
based on the time taken to complete the final round.
