Job Description

Title of Post: Literacy Lead

Grade: Main Scale/Upper Pay scale plus the appropriate TLR2a payment

Responsible to: Head Teacher

Responsible for: N/A

Main purpose of the job:


 Take specific responsibility and accountability for the day to day leadership,
management and organisation of Literacy across the school
 Work collaboratively and in consultation with partnership with subject leader
 Be an excellent classroom practitioner
 Have an impact on and report attainment and progress in all areas of Literacy
across EYFS, KS1 and KS2
 Assist in the smooth running of the school at all times

Duties and responsibilities


In addition, carrying out the duties of a class teacher as outlined in the current
School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, the post holder receives a TLR2a.

Leadership and management


 Support and implement the vision and ethos of the school
 Contribute to, implement and evaluate the success of the School Development Plan
relevant to Literacy including evaluating previous years Action Plan and writing new
Action Plan
 Ensure that the work of the school is inclusive
 Ensure that relevant policies are reviewed/written as appropriate and are translated
into practice
 Together with SLT, lead on the school self-evaluation process for Literacy including
lesson observations, work book scrutinies, learning walks and drop-ins as methods
to monitor standards and ensure improvement
 Promote cross curricular approaches to teaching and learning in Literacy
 Be a proactive and effective member of the middle leadership team
 Be an effective role model for your team in terms of teaching, behaviour and
classroom management
 Report to and inform the governing body on learning and teaching in Literacy

 Lead Literacy across the whole school
 Have overall responsibility and accountability for Literacy ensuring curriculum
progression, consistency, coverage, match and high standards
 Lead regular meetings/CPD relevant to Literacy with appropriate colleagues (SIT,
SLT Phase, Staff etc.)
 Lead on informing and supporting parents e.g. workshops, curriculum evenings,
information leaflets etc.
 Develop, demonstrate and promote teaching and learning activities appropriate to
full age and ability range.

Monitoring and assessment


 Together with the senior leadership team (SLT), contribute to, monitor and review
the impact of teaching, attainment and pupil progress through the analysis of data,
for planning and target setting across Literacy
 Monitor standards across the school including reviewing long and medium term
planning
 Organise and report on regular and systematic quality assurance events e.g. in-
school cross phase moderation, cluster moderation

Manage resources
 Be responsible for the organisation, planning and evaluation of the school
curriculum coverage and National Curriculum objectives
 Manage, monitor and accurately account for the Literacy subject budget linked to
Literacy Action Plan
 Evaluate, organise and monitor the use of resources

Staff development
 Take a lead role in identifying group and/or individual training needs and provide
support for colleagues within Literacy promoting a whole school approach
 Act as a role model, mentor, coach or consultant to colleagues as appropriate and
encourage collaboration, co-operation and teamwork
 Keep up to date with current developments in Literacy and disseminate information
as appropriate

PERSON SPECIFICATION for the role of Class Teacher

Qualifications

1. DfES- recognised Qualified Teacher Status.

2. Minimum of three years teaching experience in an inner city primary school

Experience

3. Excellent classroom practice


4. To be an outstanding classroom practitioner with a track record of good and
outstanding teaching
5. The ability to plan, teach and assess effectively to a high standard
6. Experience of promoting highly effective communications within and between
teams and other stakeholders in the school community
7. Ability to prioritise, plan and organise self and others effectively
8. Excellent subject knowledge - to be able to lead on the Literacy skills pupils should
be taught to become effective learners across the Literacy curriculum.
9. Expertise in how ICT can be used effectively to support development of Literacy
10. Experience of successfully introducing and maintaining whole school initiatives
11. An excellent understanding of assessment of new National Curriculum and how
to use it to maximise pupil progress
12. To have detailed knowledge of the (Literacy) National Curriculum and emerging
best practice and have proven experience of managing its development,
planning, delivery and assessment
13. Experienced and skilled in a range of teaching styles to promote interactive and
independent learning in Literacy

Knowledge and understanding of:

14. Theory and practice of effective teaching and learning in National Curriculum
requirements and national strategies to raise achievement in literacy and

15. Strategies to maximise progress and achievement for all children, including
writing EP’s and developing strategies for pupils with special educational needs,
pupils with Literacy as an additional language and high-achievers
