Hardware description

What this chapter contains

This chapter contains a description and single line diagrams of a system with two
parallel connected diode supply units.

Overview
The maximum size of a diode supply unit is 4540 kVA (5×D4 modules in parallel).
However, two diode supply units can be connected in parallel, when there is a need
for a higher power or redundancy. It is possible to connect two 3×D4 up to two 5×D4
units (max. 2×4540 kVA) to the same DC system.

Restrictions in use
Parallel connected DSUs must be located at the rear ends of the drive DC bus.
Other configurations are not allowed due to short circuit current withstand limitation
of the drive DC busbars.
The DSUs must be of the same size, for example two 3×D4. This ensures the equal
distribution of the load.
A common supply transformer is possible for a system with up to two 3×D4 units, if
the impedance and short-circuit tolerance of the supply transformer permit. Own
transformers are needed for systems with more than two 3×D4 units.
When using two supply transformers, they must be identical.
A common 3-winding transformer can be used for 6-pulse DSUs provided each DSU
is supplied by an own secondary (secondaries of same size, having same tolerances
the one in triangle the other in star meaning 12-pulse to the network) to get the
galvanic isolation between DSUs.

Non-redundant system

Controls
In a non-redundant system both supply units can be controlled with one set of door
switches, i.e. with one on/off/start switch, reset button and emergency stop button.
For details, see the circuit diagrams delivered with the drive.

Redundant system

Redundancy
Redundancy is possible if the system is dimensioned for a double DSU, each
running at 50% load. If one DSU fails, the drive continues operating without the
failed DSU with the other loaded at 100% power. The faulty DSU can be
disconnected from a live DC bus (and AC power source), repaired and reconnected
back to a live DC bus.

Note: Charging circuits are needed between the DC bus and the DSU, if the DSU is
reconnected to a live DC bus.

Controls
In a redundant system, both DSUs have their own on/off/start-switches allowing the
starting and stopping of the other DSU while the other is running. However, the
emergency stop circuits are always interlocked, i.e. one emergency stop button
switches off all DSUs. For details, see the circuit diagrams delivered with the drive.

Safety
The start-up can be only carried out by a qualified electrician.
The safety instructions must be followed during start-up procedure. See
the safety instructions on the first pages of the appropriate hardware
manual or ACS800 Multidrive and ACS800 Multidrive Modules Safety
Instructions [3AFE64760432 (English)].
Check the installation. See the appropriate hardware manual for more
information.
Power-up
Close the main breaker on the primary side of the supply transformer.
Close the auxiliary circuit On/Off switch Q10. Optional device. See delivery specific
circuit diagrams.
Open the earthing switch Q9 and push the air circuit breaker wagon in Optional devices. See delivery
