CO1 Predict basic engineering material problems based on its performance in civil engineering
application
Forensic investigation involves determining the problems and causes for physical failure of materials,
products or components of a building or structure, and/or infestation due to substance, fungi or toxin
that can lead to health effect upon occupants of the building or structure. When carrying visual
inspection, look for signs of defects or failures. If the problem is not detected beyond our naked eyes,
sampling and testing may be carried or measuring tools/methods are to conduct more detailed
investigation. Once the problems and causes are determined, recommendations for repair and
rehabilitation can be proposed.
3. PROJECT TASKS
You are required to conduct a forensic investigation case study at home by inspecting your house
architectural and structural conditions or any type of building (not more than 2-storeys). Investigate
around the house by inspecting the wall, floor, ceiling, roof, beams, columns, etc. for defects or
failures including but not limited to the followings:
4. METHODOLOGY
Plan the activities (methodology) to be undertaken. You may use any tool for the inspection such as
measuring tape, spirit level, steel wedge, tapping rod and camera/phone, and you are expected to
understand their functions and limitations.
