President’s Message by Joy Finley

Fall is here and we were blessed with a wonderful summer. Having been ―dark‖ during the summer it
was refreshing to have such an excellent speaker as Brad Dacus in September to get us all thinking
politics again. This month is our Membership Tea on Friday, October 19th at the Vieyra’s Elegant
Victorian Mansion. I hope all of you will make every effort to attend this fun get together. If you have a
Special Hat … please wear it that Friday. That would add to our pleasure.

There was an omission at our September meeting that I failed to call for the report of the Nominating
Committee. Thus, we will receive their report at our Tea, and Election AND Installation will both take
place at our general meeting in November.

I do look forward to seeing you this month at our Tea. Any Red Hatters out there?

LEGISLATION ALERT by VEE SORENSON

Republicans and Democrats in California have proposed two separate ballot initiatives that would change the way the Electoral
College votes are distributed and thereby change the way we elect our President. The Republican proposal would replace the
winner-take-all to a system where the votes would be awarded by how each Congressional District votes.
The Democrats have introduced ―The National Popular Vote for President Act‖. This would require States to award their
electoral votes to whichever candidate wins the most actual votes. (i.e., popular votes) nationally. We must remind ourselves that
the Founders created the Electoral College because they believed it to be the most prudent to protect the interests of a diverse
nation. They were wary of a central government with too much power.
If changes occur, urban areas would gain influence at the expense of rural votes. Presidential candidates could ignore less
populated states and areas as they campaign. I have a feeling our educational system has not taught our children why we have such
a system. Too many Americans don’t understand why the system was established by our forefathers. Let’s educate them. Write to
our local papers. If you need help writing a letter, just contact me. I will help you.

Chaplain's Message by Rita O'Connell - We would all do well to remember the words of Ronald Reagan: "if
we ever forget that we're One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under." From its very beginnings,
our country was founded on Christian principles. For many years, President Reagan and our other leaders have
reaffirmed their faith in -- and dependence upon -- God Almighty. Sadly, a majority of us today are motivated by
greed and lust for power. God has been pushed aside, but is quick to forgive. "If my people, which are called by
my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear
from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Education Update by Sheryl Fearrien
Hi everyone! Eileen, Patricia and I had a wonderful time at the National Convention of Republican Women! The side trip to the
Reagan Library was the highlight. We saw Rudy Giuliani and Mary Bono and made a lot of new friends at the convention...which got
me to thinking...
Maybe we should consider establishing a scholarship fund for educating young women to become Republicans. If we really want a
challenge, we could target democrats...but that would require finding one with a real brain. Quite a challenge, I must admit. Maybe we
should start with democrats who are really Republicans but don't know it. You know...like the little couple at our church who are for
everyone earning his/her own keep, are against abortion, and actually love God? They are democrats because everyone in their
families have ALWAYS been democrats. It could work! After all, Opal (the little lady part of the duo) gleefully announced that she had
NOT voted for Gray Davis in his reelection after I explained what he really stood for. There is
hope. Then maybe, in not the too distant future, we could target TRUE democrats, you know...the ones who hate everything American
and feel sorrow for the terrorists! Being an optimistic Republican, I can dream!

Aren’t You Tired of Being Sick and Tired...Of Being Sick and Tired? by Colleen Hedrick
Like it or not the tax paying public is in the unfortunate role of paying to be in the company of political idiots and their
addle pated puppets.
The news of the day after day is way too replete with the muck of: (A) Politicians who are convinced we’re dumb
enough to believe them.—and (B) Those politicians who are dumb enough to believe themselves. Certainly its
membership has those stalwart who almost always work at making good sense and also have realistic handles on what
they are supposed to be doing in Washington .
Most of the news is too well stocked with Looney Tunes capers such as passing bills to provide free health care for
children already covered by health care. This is presumably so parents have reason to opt out of the health plan they
now have to go for the government’s free care so the rest of us can pick up their tab. Further the cap on establishing
need would go to $80,000 income in some states and 40 plus thousand adults were also added to the proposed
numbers to be covered. What may the worst part of the distortions and extortions on this bill is that it’s naïve beyond
reason to not know in your gut that the liberals hope the Republicans won’t go along. Secondly getting such a bill
passed is still another move toward socialized medicine.
Questioning any government health program for children makes a candidate more suspect than someone who doesn’t
just love Mom’s apple pie on the Fourth of July and long underwear in a blizzard. Providing added health care honestly
needed (a whopping percentage of our youth have programs) is the right thing to do but it should be based on need and
not as a way to curry votes.
We are subject to the Liberals continual throwing about big numbers on people without health insurance. Something that
is continually ignored is that part of that number reflects that people make choices. If they can afford two or three newer
cars in their driveway, or a boat and/or other recreational vehicles in the side yard, reserved seats at the corner bar, and
seasons tickets for sports events and concerts---maybe some people make choices and health insurance is at the
bottom of the list?
FINALLY, someone has come out with a 100%
Treasurer’s Report by Cindy Lewis bipartisan political bumper sticker. It says:
Balance 8/31/07 $4984.81
Income Sept 07 0.00 "RUN, HILLARY, RUN"
Expenses Sept 07 579.90
Balance 9/30/07 $4404.91
Democrats put it on the rear bumper.
Republicans put it on the front bumper....

California Federation of Republican Women - Marianne Haydon, President * Weekly Update Saturday,
August 25, 2007 * Ballot Propositions for 2008
Two initiative measures have qualified for the February 5, 2008, Presidential Primary Election ballot and a third is
pending signature verification. One measure has already qualified for the November 8, 2008, ballot. Twenty-nine
measures are currently in circulation. Eighteen more are awaiting title and summary by the Attorney General's Office.
The two measures that have qualified are "Transportation Funding" and "Community College Governance, Funding
Stabilization and Student Fee Reduction Act". The transportation funding initiative would prohibit retention of funds
earmarked for the Transportation Investment Fund in the general fund for use unrelated to transportation after July 1,
2008 and requires repayment by June 30, 2017 of transportation funds retained in the general fund in years prior to 2007
-08. It also eliminates general fund borrowing of specific transportation funds except for cash-flow purposes and requires
repayment within thirty days of adoption of a budget. It purportedly would reduce somewhat the state's flexibility to use
specified transportation funds for other no transportation activities.
The community colleges measure, among other things, would allocate 10.46 percent of the current Prop 98 school
funding maintenance factor to community colleges and would set the community college fees at $15 per semester unit
and would limit future fee increases.
The initiative pending signature verification as of this writing is the Limits on Legislators' Terms of Office measure
which has been in circulation since April 11, 2007. 694,354 valid signatures are required for qualification. Those
signatures have been obtained and are in the process of being verified by the counties. This measure summary, in part,
states: "Reduces the total amount of time a person may serve in the state legislature from 14 to 12 years. Allows a
person to serve a total of 12 years either in the Assembly, the Senate, or a combination of both. Provides a transition
period to allow current members to serve a total of 12 consecutive years in the house in which they are currently serving,
regardless of any prior service in another house." CFRW has not taken an official position on any of these measures. They will be
analyzed and reported in future editions of the Weekly Update.

In September we had an interesting bake sale . . . three ladies brought items and we made money by auctioning
them off. Over $60 to our treasury from a cake, some biscotti and fresh green beans from Margaret Stafford’s
garden! This gives me an idea for next year—instead of a bake sale, let’s have a garden harvest sale! It’s healthier
and many of us have gardens or fruit trees.
