Introduction

The Ph.D. Development Administration with major in Public Governance is an advanced program of
study allowing you to investigate a topic relevant to public governance. Under the supervision of world-
class researchers, you will learn and apply advanced research methodologies to produce new
knowledge and provide solutions to world’s public governance challenges. Completing a research
degree means becoming an expert in your field. It is your opportunity to take a topic that interests you,
explore it in depth, tackle intellectual, creative and practical challenges, and communicate your findings.
This program helps you develop the skills to independently design and execute original research, and
create new knowledge with impact. Learned, experienced and highly qualified research advisers will
support, mentor, and guide you. You are expected to undertake exciting and innovative research across
a range of business and law disciplines, with a focus on finding practical solutions and solving real-
world problems. You are, likewise, expected to partner with industry, government, communities and
education providers to influence decision-making and challenge current thinking.

research-based knowledge in his field and its methodologies for creating new knowledge. You can

Program Overview

Program Objective. The objective of the Program is to prepare you for academic and
business careers at major universities and international firms. It is expected that you will have:

1 One or more journal publications in top-tier academic journals;


2 Multiple presentations at major academic and/or business conferences;
3 Won awards for best papers at professional conferences; and
4 Created effective personal networks with scholars/researchers from around the
world.
Course work. You are required to complete the core course requirements, and develop a
study plan in consultation with your assigned advisers. You should complete your coursework
during your first year of the program.
Research Paper. You are required to have completed a research paper for each of the core
subjects at the end of each term in the program. The research papers must focus on your chosen
field of specialization. The papers must be approved and accepted by the Doctorate Committee
at the beginning of each term. It is expected that this research output will result in a paper that is
refereed and accepted for publication in an international journal and presented in an
international forum/conferences on or before graduation.
Annual review. Your performance is reviewed at the end of each term. The review
evaluates your progress, looking at course grades, written and oral capabilities, capacity for
intellectual contribution, participation in the academic life of the school, and research
productivity and progress. This review will include a recommendation from your two advisers
to the GSBM Dean whether you should continue in the program.
You are required to attend the GSBM research seminar series every term.

Program requirements. Our program takes around three years of full-time study. You will
take on a structured, supervised program of scholarly research, leading to a dissertation that
makes an original contribution to the field and is suitable for in a series of high-quality,
refereed journal articles and/or presentations in international forum or conferences.

Two advisers with expertise in the area will be assigned to you: one is an expert in the subject,
and the other an expert in methodology. The advisers will guide you throughout your PhD
journey. You will meet your advisers once a month in addition to continuous consultation
online.

There is no formal teaching as part of your PhD program. However, aside from the regular
meetings with your advisers, you will benefit from a range of full support and learning
opportunities among others: a weekly program of formal research training in research
methodology and career development. You will have the chance to present and discuss your
research at our weekly research seminars.

Research support. The Doctorate Department will provide you training in essential skills
through its Researcher Development Program of workshops, mentoring and coaching. A
Career and Employability team will help you prepare for a successful career after the
completion of your PhD.

In this PhD program, you will develop advanced research skills that will prepare you for a
career in academia and other business settings in which systematic and critical analytical skills
are required.

Program Framework. The Program is a framework to and analyze key cultural and
environmental characteristics of any country or global region and highlights the importance of
viewing public governance from a global perspective in the areas of:

 Reforms in government policy that attempts to modernize the public sector to


produce greater efficiency.
 Producing efficiency at a low cost in an interconnected world.
 Reduces costs and breaks down the bureaucracy from a rather large entity into
smaller fragments
 More customer-focused and efficient by adopting private-sector approaches to
management or be privatized altogether
