Overview:

Transport or transportation is the movement of humans, animals and

goods from one location to another. In other words, the action
of transport is defined as a particular movement of an organism or thing
from one place to another. Cities are locations having a high level of
accumulation and concentration of economic activities and complex road
structures that are supported by transport system.

The defining trait of urban areas is density of people, activities,

and structures. The defining trait of urban transportation system is the
ability to cope with this density while moving people and goods. Density
creates challenges for urban transportation because of crowding and the
expense of providing infrastructure in built-up areas. As of today, our
mode of transportation is way better than before but on the contrary, it
causes problems especially in urban areas where the center of economy
resides. We now have our so called urban transportation problems such as
traffic congestions, crowding, loss of parking space, longer commuting
etc. Wherein excessive number of vehicles exceeds the capacity of the
road. These urban transportation problems also affects our environment in
the sense that it causes pollutions.

Objectives:
1. To determine the different Urban Transportation Problems
2. To know the solutions/mitigations for the problems indicated.

1
URBAN TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS

1. Traffic Congestion and Parking Difficulties

2. Public Transport Crowding
3. Longer Commuting
4. Public Transportation Inadequacy
5. Freight Distribution
6. Environmental impacts and Energy Consumption
7. Loss of Public Space
8. Difficulties for Pedestrians
9. Traffic Noise

2
Traffic Congestion and Parking Difficulties

Congestion is one of the most prevalent transport problems in large

urban areas where usually populated.Congestion and parking are also

interrelated since street parking consumes transport capacity and slows

down the circulation of vehicles.

Public Transport Crowding

It is a major issue for commuters around the world. During peak

hours, crowdedness in public transport creates discomfort for

commuters.

Longer Commuting
On par with congestion, people are spending an increasing amount of
time commuting between their residence and workplace.

3
Public Transportation Inadequacy
Many public transit systems, or parts of them, are either over or
under used since the demand for public transit is subjected to period of
peaks.

Freight Distribution
Globalization and the materialization of the economy have resulted in
growing quantities of freight moving within cities. As freight traffic
commonly shares infrastructures with the circulation of passengers, the
mobility of freight in urban areas has become increasingly problematic.

4
Traffic Noise
Is unwanted sound that comes from vehicles operating on roadways.
Roadway noise is the collective sound energy emanating from motor
vehicles. Noise of rolling tires driving on pavement is found to be the
biggest contributor of highway noise which increases with higher vehicle
speeds.

Environmental Impacts and Energy Consumption

Pollution, including air and noise, generated by circulation has
become a serious impediment to the quality of life and even the health of
urban populations. Energy consumption by urban transportation has
dramatically increased and so the dependency on petroleum.

5
Loss of Public Space
The majority of roads are publicly owned and free of access. Traffic
flow influence the life and interactions of residents and their usage of
street space. More traffic impedes social interactions and street
activities. People tend to walk and cycle less when traffic is high.

6
Difficulties for Pedestrians
Crossing the road is one of the major problems. Due to the increase
of fast moving vehicles on the road, pedestrian has to suffer more to
cross the road, which may lead to accidents. Accidents are also due to
lack of facilities, geometric features and guidelines.

7
MITIGATIONS/SOLUTIONS FOR URBAN TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM

How to reduce traffic congestion

1. Provide exclusive lanes for public transport

2. Use regulations to control traffic

8
3. Use number coding for both public and private vehicle

4. Road widening

5. Use innovative ideas to reduce traffic impacts on public transport

9
Solution for public transportation crowding

1. Introducing high capacity, low floor vehicle

52
2. By increasing frequency during rush time

10
3. Promote ride sharing among cab users, shuttle services for office
goers

LONGER COMMUTING

1. Rethink your route

11
Public Transportation Inadequacy

Increase the number of trains and other public services

Traffic Noise

Environmental Impacts and Energy Consumption

12
1. Keep your vehicle well-tuned and tires inflated properly to reduce
exhaust emissions

2. Combine errands into one trip — cars pollute less when they are
warmed up

3. Avoid idling — idling exhaust contains more pollutants than

running exhaust

4. If you purchase a new car, look for a low emission vehicle or LEV

Loss of Public Space

How to prevent loss of public spaces

1. Avoid parking on public streets.

2. Follow rules and regulations to avoid traffic congestion.

3. If possible take public vehicles when you are travelling to minimize

traffic.

4. The government shall provide traffic aids to ease the traffic
