1. Deutsche Leuchttürme

2. In den letzten Wochen habe ich über den Sommer, die Nordsee und die Ostsee, das
Wattenmeer und die Ostfriesen geredet. Aber eine Sache darf beim Thema Strand und
Meer natürlich nicht fehlen, und das sind Leuchttürme.

3. Fast jeder Küstenort hat einen eigenen Leuchtturm und meist ist dieser auf jeden Fall
einen Besuch wert. Leuchttürme sind einfach schön anzuschauen und von ganz oben
hat man einen wunderbaren Blick auf das Meer und die Umgebung. Ganz typisch sind
natürlich die rot-weißen Streifen auf den Leuchttürmen, aber es gibt die Türme auch in
nahezu allen anderen Farben.

4. Aber Leuchttürme sehen nicht nur gut aus, sie haben auch noch eine wichtige Funktion.
Mit ihren Leuchtsignalen weisen die Türme den Schiffen den Weg in den sicheren
Hafen. Schon früher wurde den Seefahrern und Fischern nachts mit Fackeln und
Feuerstellen der Weg geleuchtet. Der erste richtige Leuchtturm ist wohl der
Herkulesturm in Spanien, der bereits im 2. Jahrhundert gebaut wurde. Er hat zwar nicht
die typische Form oder Farbe der heutigen Leuchttürme, zählt aber als wohl ältester
Leuchtturm der Welt seit 2009 zum UNESCO-Welterbe. Der älteste Leuchtturm in
Deutschland ist der Turm in Travemünde an der Ostsee. Er stammt aus dem 13.
Jahrhundert und war bis 1972 in Betrieb.

5. Auch wenn die moderne Navigationstechnik mittlerweile viele Aufgaben der

Leuchttürme übernommen hat, kann auf die leuchtenden Türme nicht verzichtet werden.
Wenn einmal die Elektronik versagt, sind sie quasi der Fels in der Brandung. Nicht
umsonst bezeichnet man im übertragenden Sinn eine Sache oder eine Person als
Leuchtturm, die einem immer zur Hilfe steht und einem im Leben den richtigen Weg
weist.

6. Wer besonders großer Leuchtturm-Fan ist, kann übrigens auch in einem übernachten.
Der Turm „Roter Sand“ in der Nordsee steht Besuchern in den Sommermonaten offen
zur Besichtigung und auf Wunsch kann man dort auch über Nacht bleiben.

2. In recent weeks, I've talked about Summer, the North Sea and Baltic Sea, the Wadden
Sea mud flats, and the East Frisians. But there's one thing that cannot be missing when
the topic is beach and sea, and that's lighthouses.

3. Almost every place on the coast has its own lighthouse and usually these are worth a
visit. Lighthouses are simply beautiful to look at, and from up top you get a wonderful
view of the sea and the surrounding area. Typically lighthouses have red and white
stripes, but there are some in almost every other color.

4. But lighthouses don't just look nice, they also have an important function. With their light
signals, they show ships the way to safe harbors. Previously, torches and fires were used
to light the way for sailors and fishers at night. The first actual lighthouse is probably the
Tower of Hercules in Spain, which was built in the 2nd century. Although it doesn't have
the typical shape or color of current lighthouses, it is perhaps the oldest lighthouse in the
world and has since 2009 been a UNESCO World Heritage site. The oldest lighthouse in
Germany is in Travemünde on the Baltic sea. It dates back to the 13th century and was in
service until 1972.

5. Even if modern navigation technology has taken over many of the tasks of lighthouses,
we still can't do without the illuminated towers. Even if the electronics fail, they're a
bastion of calm, solid as a rock in the surf, so to speak. There's a reason we call
someone or something a lighthouse in the figurative sense, when they're always there to
help and point out the right way in life.

6. If you're an especially big lighthouse fan, you can actually stay overnight in one. The
"Red Sand" lighthouse on the North Sea is open to visitors in the summer months, and
you can stay overnight there if you want.
