February 12, 1809 - Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.

1833 - Lincoln was appointed Postmaster and then Deputy Surveyor


of New Salem.

August 4, 1834 - Lincoln was elected to the Illinois General


Assembly.

November 4, 1842 - Lincoln married Mary Todd.

August 3, 1846 - Lincoln was elected to the U.S. House of


Representatives.

November 6, 1860 - Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of


the United States.

December 20, 1860 - Southern states started to secede from


the Union.

April 12, 1861 - The Civil War began.

January 1, 1863 - Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation,


freeing all slaves.

November 19, 1863 - Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.

November 8, 1864 - Lincoln was re-elected president.

April 9, 1865 - Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court


House, ending the Civil War.

April 14, 1865 - While Lincoln was attending a play at Ford’s


Theater, John Wilkes Booth shot the President.

April 15, 1865 - President Lincoln died at 7:22 AM.

December 6, 1865 - The 13th Amendment passed, abolishing


slavery.

civil war - a war between groups in the same country. The United
States of America and the Confederate States of America fought a
civil war from 1861 to 1865.

Confederate States of America - the country formed by the


states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and North
Carolina when they left the Union between 1860 and 1861. It is
also called the Confederacy.

proclamation - an official public announcement.

ratify - to officially approve.

secede - to break away from a group.

Union - the states that remained in the United States during the
Civil War.
