The German prefix auf- has three main fields of meaning.

1. An upwards motion. For example:

aufnehmen (to pick up) vs. nehmen (to take)

aufhängen (to hang up) vs. hängen (to hang)
aufstehen (to stand up) vs. stehen (to stand)

2. Finishing off. For example:

aufhören (to stop) vs. hören (to listen)
aufessen (to eat everything) vs. essen (to eat)
aufgeben (to give up) vs. geben (to give)

3. Opening. For example:

aufmachen (to open, colloquially) vs. machen (to do)
aufbrechen (to break open) vs. brechen (to break)
auflösen (to dissolve) vs. lösen (to solve)
