‘To: Mayor Fischer
‘This letter is being sent to draw attention to a widening gap between some in city leadership and the
public servants on the front lines. During this outbreak we have every reason and every opportunity to
strengthen our resolve to be partners in advancing community stability through unity. However, city leadership
has used the pandemic to excuse and expand their continued disrespect and disregard for their own employees.
‘The executive order has created a string of unanswered grievances that should be easily resolved. Initially the
claim was that safety concerns would be prioritized. The following examples show a different value being
exhibited.
Park employees are facing a degree of risk that they have never dealt with before. Workers at our pools
are accosted. Other parks workers are being denied a safe cool place to reenergize on days with triple digit heat
indexes. Employees are being subjected to racial threats and violence with no real support from city leadership.
In each of these scenarios other than fear the other emotions they are feeling are frustration, anger, and
confusion, Employees find it troubling that a manager can poke an employee repeatedly and demean them in
front of their peers. Employees find it frustrating that no concern for their safety is evidenced when they are
accosted by citizens with guns, but management has time to focus on what route an employee takes to and from
break or belittle them in training sessions.
Our parks employees are proud of the service they provide the community during quite possibly the
most challenging time our city has faced in our lifetime. Their reward is that against this backdrop our sisters
and brothers of color are being made to feel even more marginalized.
‘Many in our community are losing faith in government's ability to function in the best interest of the
citizens of Louisville. We believe the pandemic response and specifically the treatment of the workforce should
be an opportunity to send a positive message, to repair community relationships, to heal in some respects. All
we ask is that safety concerns be addressed, rogue managers be held accountable, and common decency and
‘common sense be exercised towards our workforce. These employees have given 100% from day one. Is it too
much to ask than concerns are addressed with empathy and respect?
